When to visit Tromsø?
The choice of season depends entirely on what you want to experience. Winter (November to February) is ideal for the northern lights, dog sledding and whale watching. Summer (June–July) offers the midnight sun and spectacular hikes in permanent golden light. The shoulder seasons have their own appeal: autumn for the first auroras without the extreme cold, and spring for the return of daylight and ski touring.
What to do in Tromsø?
Tromsø is packed with activities in every season. In winter, head out on a northern lights safari, embark on a humpback and orca whale-watching cruise, discover Sámi culture around a campfire with reindeer, or hit the ski slopes with fjord views. In summer, hikes on Kvaløya and the surrounding islands are unforgettable, fjord cruises bathed in midnight sun are magical, and sea kayaking between the islands offers unique perspectives.
Where to stay in Tromsø?
Downtown Tromsø has the majority of accommodation options and is easily walkable. For a unique experience, consider a stay at a Sámi camp outside the city or an isolated cabin with fjord views — perfect for watching the auroras from your window.
How to get around?
The city centre is compact and easily explored on foot. To venture further afield (Kvaløya, Sommarøy, the fjords), a rental car is recommended. Local buses also serve the main destinations around the city. In winter, organised excursions include transport from your hotel.
