Updated: 24 September 2026

Welcome to Santorini, the island of dreams, where the blue of the Aegean Sea meets the dazzling white of traditional houses. But before you immerse yourself in this paradise, let me introduce the first stop on your trip: Santorini airport. Despite its modest size, this airport handled around 2.4 million passengers in 2025 (down from nearly 2.9 million in 2024, after the dip caused by the early-2025 earthquake swarm), all eager to discover the wonders of this Greek island.

Santorini airport – the guide

The history of Santorini airport

An airport in the heart of the Mediterranean

Santorini airport, also known as Thira airport (JTR), first opened its doors in 1972. It's located near the picturesque village of Kamari, just 6 kilometres southeast of the town of Thira. Since it opened, it has played a crucial role in the island's tourism development, making it easier for visitors from all over the world to arrive.

Continuous development

Over the years, the airport has gone through several phases of development to keep up with the growth in tourism. Despite its relatively small size, it has managed to maintain a high level of service, giving travellers a pleasant experience from the moment they arrive.

My take on the airport

Personally, I find that Santorini airport has a… unique charm. At least its small size makes it easy to navigate, and the staff are always ready to help. It's a great starting point for your Santorini adventure, whether you're planning to visit the island's picturesque villages, relax on Perissa's black sand beach or sip a glass of local wine during a Santorini wine tasting.

Unfortunately, it's still far too small for the number of tourists the island welcomes every year. You quickly end up queuing to buy food, withdraw cash or catch a taxi.

Services available at Santorini airport

A small-scale but well-equipped airport

Despite its modest size, Santorini airport offers a full range of services to meet travellers' needs. As soon as you arrive, you'll find an ATM to withdraw cash. For last-minute purchases or gifts, duty-free shops are at your disposal.

Services to make your trip easier

The airport also has customs facilities for international travellers, as well as several travel agencies to help you plan your stay on the island. If you're planning to rent a car to explore Santorini at your own pace, several car rental agencies are based at the airport. Finally, an information desk is on hand to answer all your questions and help you find your way.

A spectacular arrival

Landing at Santorini airport is an experience in itself. As your plane descends towards the island, you'll get a breathtaking view of Santorini's volcanic crescent and the caldera. It's a breathtaking sight that gives you a foretaste of the island's natural beauty.

A relaxed atmosphere

Despite the large number of tourists, Santorini airport keeps a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful, and it has the feel of a small community. It's a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of big international airports.
