What to do in Bellagio: the best activities
Exploring the historic centre of Bellagio

Photos : Pierre Bouyer
The beating heart of Bellagio lies in its cobbled alleyways lined with colourful buildings, its lively little squares and its typical shops. The Via Garibaldi, the main thoroughfare, winds through this picturesque maze where getting lost is a pleasure.
Climbing the stairs of the famous Salita Serbelloni, you will reach the most iconic viewpoint over Bellagio. Put your camera down for a moment to savour the beauty of the scene: the ochre rooftops bathed in sunlight, the pastel façades, the deep blue lake stretching as far as the eye can see.
Once at the top, carry on to the San Giacomo Basilica, a delightful Romanesque building dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Its interior, adorned with mosaics and frescoes, will transport you centuries back in time.

Tucked away in a side alley, do not miss the Enoteca Principessa, a tiny wine cellar run by a passionate owner. An ideal stop for tasting and taking home a few bottles of local nectars.
The Lungolago promenade
Stepping off the ferry, let yourself be carried along the Lungolago, the pedestrian promenade that runs along the lake from the landing stage to the Villa Melzi gardens. Lined with oleanders and benches facing the water, it is the place for the passeggiata, that Italian tradition of the evening stroll.
In the morning, you will have the path almost to yourself. Along the way, you will pass the memorial dedicated to John F. Kennedy, who visited Bellagio in June 1963, a few months before his assassination. The modern metal sculpture is not to everyone's taste, but the site remains steeped in history.
It is also from this promenade that you will get your first views of the mountains framing the lake, with the silhouettes of Varenna and the Grigne peaks as a backdrop.
Villa Melzi Gardens

Strolling through the splendid gardens of Villa Melzi is a true delight for the senses. Designed in the early 19th century in a neoclassical style, these gardens rank among the finest examples of Italian landscape art.
A maze of shaded paths will lead you from one surprise to the next: groves of camellias and azaleas, Moorish and Japanese pavilions, panoramic terraces overlooking the lake... Do not miss the family chapel, a Baroque marvel adorned with stucco and frescoes.

The gardens are open from 21 March to 31 October, daily from 10 am to 7 pm (last admission at 6:30 pm). No reservation needed, tickets on sale at both entrances (Bellagio side and Loppia side). The entrance fee is €10 per adult (2026 rate). Free for children under 11. Groups of 15+: €8. For a private guided tour, contact the villa directly by email.
With its winding paths and breathtaking viewpoints, this green oasis is the perfect place to recharge in the heart of a preserved natural setting.
Punta Spartivento

As you leave the Villa Melzi gardens, continue your walk to the very tip of the peninsula. Nicknamed "Punta Spartivento", this rocky headland offers a 360° panorama over the lake and its branches.
Here, let yourself be lulled by the lapping of the waves and the constant ballet of boats gliding across the sparkling waters. A perfect spot for birdwatching, for meditation, or simply for enjoying a drink at one of the kiosks perched on the cliffside.
If the summer heat tempts you, do not hesitate to dive in from the rocks! Small sheltered coves await you for a refreshing swim in Lake Como.
At the end of the headland, a path leads to the ancient fishing village of Pescallo. This island of tranquillity is worth the detour for its old-world charm and its village atmosphere from another era.
Scalotta per Pescallo

Fancy exploring Bellagio from a new angle? Head to the Scalotta per Pescallo, a pleasant walking trail offering a stunning view over the village and the lake.
Starting not far from Villa Melzi, this fairly easy hiking trail winds along the hillside above Bellagio. As you follow the switchbacks, you can admire the ochre rooftops standing out against the azure of Lake Como in a magnificent panorama.
The walk, about 35 round trip, ends at the peaceful hamlet of Pescallo. There, you can take a well-deserved break by the water before heading back down the same way. A real breath of fresh air and quiet just steps from the bustle of Bellagio!
Pescallo Cove

The tiny fishing port of Pescallo hides a lovely cove, ideal for lounging in peace. To reach it, cross the village and follow the water's edge along the colourful houses.
You will then discover a strip of flat rocks and pebbles, perfect for settling in with a book or a picnic. In front of you, Lake Como unfurls its clear waters, where a few traditional boats dip their hulls.
In summer, the boldest can even leap into the water from the rocks for a refreshing swim or a paddleboarding session! But this cove remains relatively unspoilt thanks to its tricky access. A true haven of peace to enjoy without the crowds...
Lake Lecco and surrounding villages

But the exploration does not stop at Bellagio's gates! The town's privileged location makes it an ideal starting point for roaming the shores of Lake Como and Lake Lecco.
By taking the famous boat shuttles, you can reach gems like Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzina and Lierna. Each of these towns holds its share of architectural treasures and breathtaking views.
I strongly recommend dedicating a day to exploring the surrounding villages.
Varenna

Just a 20-minute crossing away, the charming village of Varenna awaits you on the other side of the lake. Wander its cobbled lanes in search of the famous Villa Monastero and its botanical garden, a true oasis of greenery nestled in the heart of the village.
The Church of San Giorgio, clinging to the cliffside, reveals a cloister and a breathtaking panorama over Lake Como. A gourmet break is then a must at the Trattoria del Milion, to sample local specialities such as fish risotto.
Lierna

More under the radar than its neighbour, Lierna is no less appealing with its pedestrian historic centre dotted with elegant Renaissance-era residences. A stop at the Castello di Lierna will take you back in time to the medieval era.
For lovers of natural gorges, do not miss the Orrido di Nesso, accessible by ferry from Bellagio. This impressive waterfall wedged into a rock gorge plunges directly into the lake.
Piona Abbey

Then continue on to Piona Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century. Majestically overlooking the lake, it houses a sumptuous Romanesque basilica, a Renaissance cloister and terraced gardens where you can linger.
You can even book a guest room in this spiritual retreat for a refreshingly monastic experience.
Villa Balbianello and the Azalea Riviera
From Bellagio, the ferry to Lenno (about 30 minutes) drops you at the doorstep of Villa Balbianello, one of the most photographed sites on Lake Como. Perched on a wooded promontory, this 18th-century villa served as a filming location for Star Wars (Attack of the Clones) and James Bond (Casino Royale).
Visiting the gardens and interior of the villa takes about 1.5 hours. Booking is mandatory via the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) website.
Continuing along the western shore, you will discover the Azalea Riviera: Tremezzina, Menaggio, and Villa Carlotta with its spectacular botanical gardens, particularly in April-May when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom.
Madonna del Ghisallo

Before leaving Bellagio, why not take the panoramic road leading to the famous Ghisallo Pass? At 552 m above sea level, this cycling shrine houses an astonishing little church dedicated to the Madonna of Cyclists. A true sanctuary of unusual treasures!
At the adjoining Museo del Ciclismo, you will discover collections of objects and jerseys retracing the epic of the Giro d'Italia and the "cyclo bella vita". The bravest will even attempt the legendary climb to the pass, a training ground favoured by champions.
One last look at the splendid panorama of Lake Como is a must before heading back down to Bellagio, your head and heart filled with unforgettable memories!

When to visit Bellagio

Spring (April-May), The best time. The gardens burst with colour (azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons), temperatures are pleasant (15-22°C) and crowds remain manageable. The villas reopen after winter.
Summer (June-August), Peak season, heavy crowds, highest prices. But the long days and warm temperatures (25-30°C) allow swimming and terrace aperitivi until 9 pm. Book everything in advance.
Autumn (September-October), Excellent compromise: fewer crowds, magnificent golden light, still warm enough for outdoor dining. The autumn foliage adds a touch of magic to the landscapes.
Winter (November-March), Very quiet, many hotels and restaurants closed. But lovers of solitude will appreciate the melancholic atmosphere of the misty lake. The Christmas markets in Como and Bellagio are worth a visit in December.
