Discovering Perivolos Beach in Santorini

6 min read

Perivolos beach offers a more relaxed alternative to Santorini's busier spots. Black sand, beach bars and watersports make it a favourite among locals.

Updated: 24 September 2026

Perivolos, one of the longest beaches on Santorini with its volcanic black sand, is an idyllic spot to enjoy the sun, the turquoise sea and the island's serene atmosphere. Having visited this beach several times, I can tell you it's a place well worth discovering.

Located in the south of the island, just 3 km from Perissa, Perivolos is a favourite with water sports enthusiasts and couples in search of romance. With its long shoreline, crystal-clear waters and quality facilities, this beach has all the ingredients for a successful holiday on Santorini.

Perivolos beach

A magnificent black sand beach

Perivolos is home to one of the longest black sand beaches on Santorini, stretching along 1.5 km of coastline. Its volcanic sand contrasts beautifully with the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. The slope down to the sea is fairly steep, so you quickly reach swimming depth.

The seabed is sandy for the most part, but there are also a few rocky, pebbly patches. I recommend wearing water shoes to move around the shoreline more comfortably. The setting is idyllic, with a breathtaking view of the volcano and the rest of the island.

An ideal place and beach for swimming

Swimming at Perivolos is pure bliss! The water is clear, crystalline and pleasantly warm from spring onwards. The sandy seabed lets you ease gradually into the sea, although the deeper areas come up quickly close to the shore.

I especially love swimming out further, facing the grand landscape of the volcano and the towering cliffs. The waves are generally moderate, which makes for very pleasant swimming conditions. For the more active, you can also try snorkelling, jet skiing and admire the underwater world.

Why I love Perivolos beach

I adore Perivolos beach on Santorini

I particularly love Perivolos for its atmosphere, both serene and lively. Couples come here for a touch of romance and families for a quiet spot. But water sports lovers and party-goers will find what they're looking for too!

It's a beach that has kept its authentic charm while offering all the facilities you need for a pleasant stay: restaurants, bars, sports equipment rentals, beach volleyball courts and more. You can feel both at peace and have as much buzz as you want.

Finally, I love that sublime contrast between the black sand and the turquoise waters, and the idyllic setting facing the Santorini volcano. It's a true haven of peace where I recharge every time I stay on the island. Perivolos will always be one of my favourite beaches in the Cyclades! ❤
