Santorini's hidden treasures

Santorini, that iconic Greek island, isn't only famous for its breathtaking sunsets or its picturesque villages like Oia and Fira. Beneath its crystal-clear waters lie wonders that only divers can appreciate. Imagine swimming alongside ancient volcanic formations, exploring underwater caves and discovering rich, varied marine life. To find out more about Santorini's flora and fauna, check out our detailed article here.

My personal experience

On my first dive in Santorini, I was amazed by the beauty of the underwater world. The shades of blue, the colourful fish and the rock formations left me speechless. I was lucky enough to dive near Thirassia, a small island next to Santorini, where I discovered old wrecks and vibrant corals. It was an unforgettable experience and I highly recommend that every diving enthusiast give it a try.

The appeal of rock formations and wrecks

Santorini is one of a kind. Thanks to its volcanic history, the island offers incomparable dive sites. The rock formations, created by past eruptions, form fascinating underwater labyrinths. What's more, several wrecks rest on the seabed, silent witnesses to the island's maritime history. For history lovers, the ancient city of Thera is a must-visit after a day of diving.

Expert advice

Before setting off on the adventure, make sure you choose a reputable travel agency and check the weather conditions. The weather in Santorini can be unpredictable, and it's essential to dive in optimal conditions for a safe and enjoyable experience. Also, don't forget to stay hydrated: drinking water in Santorini is essential to avoid dehydration after a dive.

First diving experience

The island's underwater splendours

The wonder of your first dive

Remembering your first dive is like remembering your first kiss. The anticipation, the excitement, then that feeling of total immersion in an unknown world. The salt water caresses your skin, bubbles slowly escape from your mouth, and the underwater silence envelops everything. It's a moment of pure magic. For my part, I remember that feeling of weightlessness, as if I were flying in the middle of a ballet of colourful fish. Every sound, every movement seemed amplified, and the outside world had faded away, giving way to this new aquatic reality.

The importance of choosing well

But before living this transcendent experience, it's crucial to choose the right dive centre. Santorini is full of centres, but they're not all equal. On my first visit, I took the time to compare, read reviews and chat with the instructors.

Personally, I recommend Santorini Dive Centre, which I introduce a little further down in the article.

Initial training: an essential step

Diving isn't just about sensations, it's also a discipline that requires technical knowledge. Before venturing into the depths, you must complete initial training. It will familiarise you with the equipment, breathing techniques and safety measures. I can't stress this enough: never neglect your training. It's the key to a successful and safe experience. During my training, I learned to manage my air consumption, communicate underwater and react to the unexpected. These skills proved invaluable on my later dives.

Tips for beginners

Getting ready for the big adventure

Diving is a unique experience, but to enjoy it fully, proper preparation is essential. Before diving, I recommend getting a good night's sleep the night before. A rested mind is more alert and responsive. Also, avoid alcohol or heavy meals before your dive. Opt instead for a light, protein-rich meal. Personally, I always go for a good smoothie or a salad before diving.

Equipment and precautions

Your equipment is your best ally underwater. Make sure you have a well-fitting mask, comfortable fins and a buoyancy compensator suited to your size. If you have your own equipment, that's perfect. If not, Santorini's dive centres generally provide quality gear. Don't hesitate to ask your instructor for advice on choosing the most suitable equipment.

It's also essential to check your gear before every dive. A single fault can turn a pleasant experience into a nightmare.

Safety first

Diving is an exciting activity, but it also carries risks. Safety must always be your priority. Listen carefully to your instructor's directions and ask any questions that come to mind. A good instructor will take the time to answer your questions and reassure you.

The best dive spots in Santorini

Don't get close to lionfish: a venomous species

Nea Kameni: the volcanic heart

Nea Kameni, the volcanic island in the centre of Santorini's caldera, is an exceptional dive site. Underwater, the rock formations bear witness to the island's eruptive history. Divers can expect to see hydrothermal vents and gas bubbles escaping from the seabed. You'll be fascinated by the unique underwater topography, a living reminder of the power of nature.

Kamari: the mysterious wreck

Kamari is famous for its black sand beach, but underwater, an old wreck awaits divers. This wreck, which I was lucky enough to explore, is a testament to Santorini's rich maritime past. Surrounded by colourful fish and corals, it offers a historic and picturesque diving experience.

Vlychada: the underwater canyons

Vlychada is a spectacular dive site, characterised by its underwater canyons and caves. Swimming through these formations is like exploring another world. The play of light through the cracks in the canyons creates an almost supernatural atmosphere. For me, Vlychada is a must-see for any diver visiting Santorini.

Aspronisi: the coral garden

Aspronisi, a small island south of Santorini, is a paradise for coral lovers. The site is famous for its colourful coral gardens and abundant marine life. You'll be amazed by the diversity of species and the beauty of the corals. It's an ideal spot for underwater photographers.

Thirassia: the hidden treasure

Thirassia, often seen as living in Santorini's shadow, is actually a gem for diving. With its crystal-clear waters and less crowded dive sites, it's the ideal place for a peaceful experience. Divers can expect to see fascinating caves and varied marine life.

Marine life in Santorini

Diving in Santorini

An unforgettable underwater ballet

Santorini, although famous for its stunning landscapes and magical sunsets, hides an equally fascinating world beneath its waters. Marine life here is rich and varied, offering divers an unrivalled visual experience.

The stars of the deep

Among the most iconic inhabitants of Santorini's waters are the groupers, majestic and curious, which don't hesitate to approach divers. Schools of silvery fish, such as sardines and anchovies, create real shimmering clouds underwater. Seahorses, with their elegant look and graceful movement, are always a treat for the eyes. Not forgetting octopuses, those chameleons of the sea, able to change colour and texture in the blink of an eye.

Protecting our marine treasure

However, this biodiversity is fragile. As divers, we have a responsibility to protect this unique environment. That means avoiding touching or disturbing marine creatures, not taking corals or shells, and above all, being aware of our impact.

Snorkelling vs scuba diving

Diving in Santorini

Two ways to explore the underwater world

The Aegean Sea, with its clear waters and abundant marine life, offers plenty of opportunities for those who want to explore its depths. Whether you're a seasoned diver or simply a snorkelling fan, Santorini has something to offer everyone.

Snorkelling: a first taste

For those who aren't yet ready to strap on a tank and dive into the depths, snorkelling is an excellent alternative. With just a mask, a snorkel and fins, you can float on the surface and observe the underwater world from above. It's a relaxing activity that's accessible to everyone, whatever their age or fitness level. Personally, I love grabbing my mask and snorkel and exploring the shallow waters near the coast. It's always a pleasure to see the little fish and rock formations from a different perspective.

Where to go snorkelling in Santorini

Santorini is full of ideal snorkelling spots. Among my favourites is Perissa's black sand beach, where the calm waters and nearby rock formations make for an exceptional snorkelling experience. White Beach is another must-see spot, with its white cliffs contrasting with the deep blue of the sea. Finally, Amoudi Bay is a picturesque spot, ideal for a day of snorkelling followed by a delicious meal in one of the local restaurants.

Santorini Dive Center

Diving in Santorini

Diving into the azure blue of the Aegean Sea is an experience to have at least once in your life. And for that, Santorini Dive Center, located on Caldera Beach in Akrotiri, is the ideal place.

The offer in detail

For just €90 per person, you can join a safe and fun scuba diving session over the volcanic seabed off Santorini's coast. No diving certificate is needed: this introductory dive is open to everyone aged 10 and over, and lasts 2 hours.

The thrill level is clearly aimed at adventurers and doesn't require exceptional physical fitness. The languages spoken are English and Greek, which makes communication easy.

The diving experience

Scuba diving in Santorini is an exceptional experience. After 20 minutes of preparation, you'll put on your wetsuits and equipment and walk into the water, right next to the beach. The shallow waters will welcome you for your first breaths underwater.

Then, guided by an instructor, you'll dive towards a nearby reef. There, you'll be able to hand-feed the fish. Fascinating, isn't it?

In total, you'll be underwater for approximately 35 to 40 minutes. It's a unique opportunity to discover Santorini's underwater world, populated by fascinating and colourful creatures. I remember my first dive here, and I can tell you it's a memorable experience!

  • You must be able to swim for this activity.
  • Minors must have written parental consent.
  • After booking, you'll need to provide the dive centre with the following information: the names of all participants and each person's height, weight and shoe size so that the equipment can be arranged.
  • Important: you are not allowed to fly for 12 hours after your last dive.

What's included

With this offer, Santorini Dive Center provides all the diving equipment, as well as water, tea/coffee and snacks. You also have access to toilets, a beach shower, sun loungers, parasols and a locker.

Don't forget to bring your beachwear and a towel.

Other dive centres

I also recommend Scuba Diving Santorini, which offers much the same thing with the same quality of service.

Conclusion: Santorini, an underwater gem to discover

Santorini, well known for its breathtaking panoramas and iconic sunsets, also holds treasures beneath its azure waters. Whether you're a seasoned diver, a beginner or simply a snorkelling fan, the island offers you a gateway to a rich and fascinating underwater world.

Over the course of my dives and explorations, I've witnessed the beauty and diversity of the marine life that inhabits these waters. Every dive site tells a story, every sea creature inspires wonder. But beyond simply observing, it's essential to remember the importance of preserving and respecting this delicate ecosystem.

In the end, Santorini isn't just a destination for admiring spectacular views from dry land. It's also a call to dive, explore and connect with nature in a deeply personal and enriching way. So on your next visit, don't hesitate to immerse yourself in the island's aquatic wonders. You'll leave with unforgettable memories and, I hope, a new appreciation for the hidden wonders of our planet.
