Traveling light is truly liberating... Let's be honest — who hasn't dreamed of getting around without lugging tons of baggage? However, it's not always easy to travel light. Between necessary compromises, essentials to pack, choosing the right bag, and your destination's climate, it can feel overwhelming. To help you find the right approach, here are 10 tips I've used during my travels to pack light and stress-free...
Worried about your bag getting lost at the airport? Some insurance providers like Chapka not only protect you in case of incidents but also cover your luggage! For me, it's a must-have on every trip.
When packing, choose only what you'll actually need. The items you bring should suit the climate and nature of your destination. Focus on the bare essentials and avoid anything superfluous to travel light. This starts with everything you pack “just in case.”
2. Choose the right travel bag
To travel light, it's smart to equip yourself with either a backpack or a lightweight suitcase. Also, avoid choosing an overly spacious suitcase — you'll inevitably be tempted to fill it completely. Personally, I always go with a backpack, which offers greater flexibility and is infinitely easier to carry! And avoid breaking your back when moving around…
(something I should have paid more attention to during my round-the-world trip…)
3. Choose microfiber clothing
Regardless of your trip type or destination, you'll need clothes. However, it's recommended to prioritize microfiber clothing. They're lighter and, consequently, much easier to carry.
I'd also add Gore-Tex clothing today, which offers incomparable quality and can meet virtually all your needs!
4. Wear your heaviest clothes
Another tip for traveling light: wear your heavy clothes on you. Instead of packing your sneakers in the bag, wear them during your journey. Leave the sandals in the suitcase instead.
5. Make a list beforehand
Planning is essential for anyone wanting to travel light. While you should avoid being overloaded, you shouldn't forget essential items either. So, to make sure you don't forget anything, it's best to make a list of indispensable items. Well… Personally, I tend to pack a few hours before departure, which is why I ALWAYS forget something! Do as I say, not as I do!
6. Buy on the spot
To leave with minimal luggage, avoid buying products you can find at your destination. This includes flip-flops, hygiene products, towels… Plus, it supports the local economy! (Of course, steer clear of big international chains!)
7. Go digital with books
For holidays, books are a must-have. However, they're very heavy. And for traveling light, that's really not ideal. So, to satisfy your love of novels while traveling light, go for digital versions. YES, this was a very difficult step for me too. But I prefer carrying 1,000 books on my smartphone over a single one that weighs two kilos.
8. Do laundry on the go
First and foremost, prioritize fabrics that dry easily. This will allow you to wash them on the go, even during your trip. And for those heading somewhere without washing machines, there are solutions for doing hand washing.
9. Travel disconnected
It would also be great to travel completely disconnected from the world. To do this, you'd need to make tough compromises — leaving the laptop, tablets, camera, etc. at home. Easier said than done, and honestly, for me it's impossible to leave my camera and laptop behind. But in theory, that's what you should do.
10. Leave room for souvenirs
Traveling always brings encounters and discoveries. You might fall in love with exotic objects to bring home. Displayed in your living spaces, these items will bring back wonderful memories of your trip… but you need to have planned space for them beforehand. All the more reason to leave room in your bag!
Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what tips you use to reduce the weight of your luggage when traveling! I'm curious to discover new techniques!
