Comment accéder à Vlychada Beach

A little-known beach in Santorini

By car

Vlychada Beach is easy to reach by car, by motorbike and by quad. Two main roads lead there:

Either way, the route is well signposted. A large free car park is located right next to the beach.

Allow a 45-minute drive from Oia, 25 minutes from Fira, and just 15 minutes from Perissa.

By bus

The Thera-Vlychada bus line connects Fira to Vlychada in approximately 25 minutes. KTEL's 2026 summer timetable has only a few daily departures from Fira (ticket €2.80): check the times on the company's website before you go.

By little tourist train

During high season (mid-June to late September), a little tourist train links Perissa to Vlychada. A practical and fun option, which notably runs along the seafront at Perivolos!

The sculpted cliffs

Impressive cliffs

The real show at Vlychada beach is its spectacular volcanic cliffs, which give it an almost lunar look. These rock walls rise several metres high. Sculpted over thousands of years by wind, rain and sea, they form a breathtaking backdrop that contrasts with the beach's black sand.

You can make out arches, columns and small coves, like so many natural sculptures. In places, the rock reveals superb shades of red and yellow that blaze under the Greek sun.

These twisting rock formations are perfect for contemplation and photography. They are definitely the star of the show at Vlychada!

The black sand typical of Santorini's beaches

But still a pleasant beach

Like most beaches in Santorini, Vlychada beach has the distinctive feature of dark-coloured sand.

This sand comes from the erosion of the island's volcanic rock. Its black or grey colour stands out against the whiteness of the surrounding houses and cliffs.

The ground is a mix of black sand, small pebbles and sometimes stones. Even if the feeling underfoot can be surprising at first, you get used to it very quickly.

To avoid injuries, though, wearing water shoes is recommended when going into the sea, as the seabed is a little rocky.

An uncrowded beach

Little known to tourists, Vlychada beach is peaceful

Vlychada beach is fairly secret and remains unknown to many visitors. Its isolation and the lack of a road running along the coast thankfully protect it from mass tourism.

So even in the height of summer, you're far from the crowds you'll find on more popular beaches such as Perissa Beach or Kamari Beach.

You get a real feeling of privacy, ideal for relaxing and lazing around. Calm reigns, broken only by the backwash of the waves. ☮

It's a little corner of paradise for lovers of unspoilt nature and fans of wild beaches!

The ideal beach for…

Vlychada beach is the Santorini beach for you if:

  • You're looking for breathtaking landscapes
  • You want a calm beach without too many people
  • You love swimming and sunbathing in an unusual setting
  • You love capturing unique moments in photos!

In short, it's the perfect place to marvel at an almost unreal setting between sky, sea and volcanic rock.

Facilities at Vlychada Beach

Vlychada beach in Santorini, the island's hidden beach

Even though Vlychada Beach may seem wild at first glance, there are a few very handy facilities on site.

The beach bar

There's a beach bar at the southern end of the beach, near the car park.

You can rent sunloungers and parasols for the day there. Prices are reasonable: allow €5 for a pair of sunloungers with a parasol.

The bar serves snacks, ice creams, cold drinks and cocktails. In short, everything you need for a refreshing break!

Toilets

There are public toilets and a shower near the car park, which is much appreciated.

Some restaurants a little higher up the hill also have their own toilets for customers.

Quelques tavernes

There are 2-3 traditional tavernas on the hill just above the beach, with fresh fish on the menu in particular.

They offer a bird's-eye view over the bay and the famous cliffs. Perfect for enjoying breakfast or dinner with a view!

My take on Vlychada Beach

I was lucky enough to visit Vlychada Beach on my last holiday in Santorini. And I was blown away by the grand, unusual landscapes. You'd think you'd been beamed onto another planet!

It's a pleasure to stroll along this huge wild beach, between sculpted cliffs and stretches of black sand.

Swimming was very pleasant, with limpid, crystal-clear water. Watch out for the underwater rocks, though. It's best to have good beach shoes!

What I loved most was the calm atmosphere, so different from the packed beaches of Perissa. I felt as if I were alone in the world, with only the sound of the waves and the flight of the seagulls for company.

The icing on the cake: the sunset seen from the heights of Vlychada was fabulous. The pink hues on the cliffs are a breathtaking sight! The place then seems unreal…

In short, I literally fell for this still-unspoilt stretch of beach in Santorini. The magic of the place, both wild and romantic, works 100%!

I highly recommend making a detour there during your stay on the island. You won't regret it!

Conclusion

With its surreal landscapes between azure sky and ochre rocks, Vlychada Beach is a secret little paradise in Santorini. This wild black-sand beach charms with its limpid waters and a calm that's ideal for both swimming and lazing around.

Its spectacular cliffs, sculpted by nature, make it a dream setting for photographers. Authentic and unspoilt, this corner of the island offers a timeless interlude far from the summer crowds.
