01How to save on accommodation in Santorini
Accommodation in Santorini will be your biggest expense during your trip. As soon as you check Airbnb or Booking, you'll see jaw-dropping rates that can blow your budget wide open.
Fortunately, there are ways to save on this expense and make prices more affordable.
02Budget accommodation tips for Santorini
1. Visit in the off-season
Avoid summer when Santorini is packed and prices are at their highest. If you want to make real savings, I recommend visiting the Greek islands in spring or autumn. Between April/May and October/November, you can still enjoy great weather while avoiding the crowds and sky-high prices.
In fact, I think your trip will be far more enjoyable than in the middle of summer when the sun scorches every inch of skin and some spots are overrun with tourists.
Visiting Santorini in winterwill be even cheaper, however your experience will be quite diminished. Indeed, many shops, restaurants and attractions simply close their doors during that season. So if you still want to do things during your trip, I recommend aiming for the shoulder season.
To know exactly which month to pick, check our guide to Santorini in October which details the advantages of the late season.

2. Stay in lesser-known areas of the island
Booking in the village of Oia will cost you a pretty penny, no matter what season you visit. However, there are many other places on Santorini that rival its beauty.
Fira, for instance, is the largest town on Santorini and is much more affordable. I also fell in love with Imerovigli, which is the highest village on the island. You can also head to the villages of Perissa or Kamari, which are both by the sea and offer wonderfully affordable accommodation.
3. Do your research to find the right accommodation
There are truly tons of hotels all over Santorini. If your budget is tight, you might consider finding a hostel or an Airbnb rather than a traditional hotel.
But the most important thing is to cross-reference your search results. For example, accommodation may be cheaper on Hotels.com than on Booking, or vice versa.
Last year, I saved close to €500 by booking on one site rather than another.
4. Book early
Santorini is a popular destination, and in high season almost everything is fully booked. And the fewer options there are, the more they raise prices. So it's super important to book several months in advance to have the widest selection at the best price.
One of the great pleasures in Greece is the fresh, flavourful Greek food. And while you're looking to save money, there are many ways to keep your budget in check while still tasting some of the most delicious dishes in Santorini.
5. Skip the cliffside and sunset restaurants
While you'll want to enjoy the fabulous views of Santorini, you can save money by avoiding restaurants that charge a premium for them.
At other restaurants, you won't pay for the view and the food will be just as delicious. And besides, eating while the sun is blinding your eyes isn't that pleasant anyway.
6. Avoid restaurants in Oia
As I mentioned earlier, Oia is the tourism hotspot of Santorini. Here, prices will be two to three times higher than in other towns. And that includes restaurants. You'll find much cheaper options in other parts of the island.
7. Look for affordable but filling food
Looking to save even more money? There are many types of restaurants that offer takeaway food.
And if you're really on a tight budget, I recommend trying Greek "gyros". They're a kind of local kebab that's truly delicious, filling and affordable. (OK, they're not exactly the healthiest option either)
But you can find them for €3.50 to €5.50 at stands in Fira like Lucky's Souvlakis or Yogi Gyros!
8. Stay at a hotel with breakfast included
Many hotels in Santorini offer breakfast. If it's included in the price, it saves you the cost of one meal per day. Just show up at the last slot, often between 10:30 and 11:00 am, and eat as much as you possibly can.
Sure, it's not the classiest move, but it can help you skip lunch entirely!
9. Visit local markets
You can save even more money in Santorini by visiting local shops and supermarkets. I found one not far from Fira, and prices are a steal compared to restaurants. You can easily put together breakfast and even find sandwiches and snacks for a quick lunch.
It's also a good idea to buy snacks to tide you over until the next meal.
10. Don't miss happy hour
Many restaurants and bars offer a happy hour. You'll often find two-for-one drink deals. And with that nice discount, drinking becomes perfectly affordable in Santorini.
To avoid currency exchange fees, I always travel with my Wise card which offers the real exchange rate with no commission.
04Save on transport in Santorini
Getting to and from Santorini, as well as travelling around the island, can be expensive. Here are some tips to reduce costs as much as possible.
11. Take the bus, skip the taxis
While taxis are always the easiest option for getting around Santorini, they're also the most expensive. On Santorini, there aren't that many taxi companies, which can mean long waits and higher fares.
Fortunately, the bus system is affordable and fairly reliable. Most trips cost between €1.80 and €2.80 depending on the destination (€2.20 for most routes) and they can get you almost anywhere on the island. You just need to stick to the timetable.
Alternatively, you can rent a quad for the duration of your stay. Easy to use and cheap, it's clearly the option I recommend for your trip.
12. Book ferries or flights in advance
Just like accommodation, booking your ferries and flights to Santorini in advance will save you a lot of money.
Generally, prices increase as the date approaches. If you book more than two months ahead, you can get great savings on ticket prices!
13. Take overnight ferries
If you're in the Cyclades to island-hop, ferry costs can quickly add up and become a significant expense. However, there are options for overnight ferries.
This is an excellent option for budget-conscious travellers, as you can save on your ferry ticket by up to 50%! And on top of that, you'll save the price of a night in a hotel or hostel.
Of course, you won't sleep as well, but you also won't lose a full vacation day on the ferry.
14. Walk as much as you can!
There are quite a few places you can reach on Santorini just by walking. For instance, you can easily do the short hike between Oia and Fira. And you can comfortably walk around the different towns.
05Save on activities in Santorini
Santorini is a beautiful island offering plenty of activities, even on a tight budget. Here are some tips for saving money on your Santorini activities.
15. Enjoy free activities and attractions
As you've gathered, Santorini can be enjoyable even on a tight budget. Think about the simple things: the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, some of the most beautiful sunsets on the planet, delicious food, winding whitewashed alleyways. You can simply have an unforgettable holiday without spending a fortune on sunset cruises and vineyard tours.
16. Skip organised tours and do it yourself
Like all popular tourist destinations, Santorini offers many excursions around the island. Rather than signing up for an organised tour, do it yourself! On top of being more unique, interesting and exciting, you'll save a good amount of money. Take the opportunity to rent a quad, a bike or a car to explore areas that buses can't reach. And at the same time, you'll save a nice chunk of money.
To compare rental prices, I always use DiscoverCars which aggregates all local agencies in one place.
06Frequently asked questions
Budget between €65 and €100 per day per person for an economical trip. This covers accommodation in Kamari or Perissa (€45-60/night), meals at local tavernas or gyros (€20-30/day) and bus travel (€2-3/trip).
A gyro pita costs between €3.50 and €5.50 depending on the location. The cheapest spots are in Fira, especially Lucky's Souvlakis and Yogi Gyros.
April-May and September-October offer the best value for money: pleasant weather (22-28 °C), fewer crowds and accommodation rates 30 to 50% lower than summer.
Yes. The KTEL network covers the whole island from the central bus station in Fira. Tickets cost between €1.80 and €2.80 depending on the destination. The only downside: all routes go through Fira, so you often need to transfer.
A quad offers more freedom for €25 to €40/day and lets you reach remote beaches and villages. The bus is cheaper but comes with fixed schedules and transfers through Fira. For stays of more than 2 days, a quad is often the better choice.
