Welcome to Santorini, a true paradise for families looking for unforgettable adventures! This Greek island, famous for its white houses with blue roofs and breathtaking sunsets, is the perfect place to make precious memories with your children. With its black sand beaches, picturesque villages and family activities, Santorini has plenty to delight young and old alike.

Why choose Santorini for a family trip?
Breathtaking scenery
Picture yourself exploring the narrow lanes of Oia or Fira with your children, two of the most beautiful villages on the island. Every street corner reveals another spectacular view over the Aegean Sea and the white houses perched on the cliffs. It's a real playground for children, who'll love getting lost in this maze of cobbled alleys.
A child-friendly island
Despite its steep slopes and countless steps, Santorini is surprisingly family-friendly. Children will love climbing the stairs to reach the highest viewpoints, and parents will appreciate how easy it is to get around the island. Whether you choose to rent a car, a quad or get around by bus, you'll always find a practical and fun way to discover the island.
A wealth of activities for the whole family
Santorini is packed with activities for children of all ages. Whether you'd rather spend a relaxing day on Perissa's black sand beach, visit the ancient city of Thera, take a trip to Santorini's volcanoes, or discover Akrotiri, you'll always find something to keep the whole family entertained.
Santorini is a dream destination for families. With its spectacular scenery, child-friendliness and wealth of activities, this Greek island has everything going for it.

When to visit Santorini with family?
The best times for a family trip
Santorini can be visited all year round, but for a family trip some periods are better than others. To make the most of your stay, I recommend visiting Santorini in May-June or September-October. Why these months? Quite simply because the weather in Santorini is particularly pleasant then. Temperatures are mild, the sun is out and the summer crowds are thinner.
The advantages of these periods
In May-June and September-October, Santorini is at its best. Temperatures, ranging between 20 and 25°C, are ideal for outdoor activities, whether it's a hike from Fira to Oia or a day at Red Beach. What's more, with fewer tourists on the island, you can enjoy the sights without the crowds and find a table in the restaurants and a room in the hotels more easily.
How long to spend in Santorini with family?
The ideal length for a family stay
The ideal length of a stay in Santorini depends on what you want and how much time you have. However, to make the most of what the island has to offer, I recommend planning at least a week. That gives you time to visit the main sights, relax on the beaches and discover the local culinary specialities. If you have more time, don't hesitate to extend your stay: Santorini is full of treasures to discover!
Personally, though, I find 10 days is the maximum. Beyond that, you quickly end up repeating the same activities. Why not extend your trip to Crete?
My advice for a successful stay
For a successful family stay in Santorini, I recommend planning your itinerary carefully. Start by listing the sites you absolutely want to see, then organise your schedule around them. Don't forget to leave time for relaxing and exploring freely: after all, you're on holiday! And above all, let yourself be surprised by the island's charms: Santorini has so much to offer beyond its best-known sights.

Practical tips for travelling to Santorini with children
Getting around Santorini
Santorini is a relatively small island, which makes getting around easy. However, it's important to choose the means of transport that best suits your family.
Renting a car is a practical option for exploring the island at your own pace. You can find more information on car rentals in Santorini in our dedicated article here.
If you'd rather not drive, local buses are an affordable alternative. They serve most of the tourist sites and beaches. However, they can be packed in high season.
Finally, for a truly unique experience, why not rent a quad? It's a fun and exciting way to get around, especially for older children.
What to pack in your suitcase?
When you travel with children, packing well is essential. Here are a few items not to forget:
- 01Clothes: Santorini has a Mediterranean climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Pack light clothes for summer, but don't forget a hat and sunscreen to protect your children from the sun. In winter, warmer clothes are needed, especially in the evening.
- 02Sunscreen: the sun is strong in Santorini, so protect your skin and your children's as much as possible.
- 03Games and entertainment: why not a mölkky set to play on the beach?
- 04Snacks: children often get hungry at unexpected moments. Having snacks to hand can be a real lifesaver, especially when you're on the move.
- 05First aid kit: always keep a first aid kit to hand when travelling with children. Make sure to include plasters, antiseptics and medicine for common ailments such as fever or stomach aches.

Santorini: a safe destination for families
Santorini is a top destination for families. The island is known for its safety and its warm welcome towards children. Santorini's residents are known for their hospitality and their love of children, which makes the island even more appealing for families. What's more, most tourist sites and activities are suitable for children of all ages. However, as on any trip, it's important to always keep an eye on your children, especially near the cliffs and on the beaches. For more information on safety in Santorini, read our article on the subject here.
2026 update: between late January and early March 2025, an earthquake swarm of several thousand tremors between Santorini and Amorgos led to a state of emergency on the island. Activity had returned to normal levels by spring 2025, cruise ships resumed in March-April 2025, and the island is once again welcoming families as usual.
Respecting the peace and quiet
During your stay in Santorini, it's important to respect the peace and quiet of the places you visit. This is especially true in hotels, where noise can disturb other guests. So it's a good idea to make sure your children aren't too loud, especially during quiet hours. Remember that many people are there to rest!
That said, most hotels in Santorini are very understanding and welcoming towards families with children. They often offer activities for kids, which can help keep them busy and cut down on noise.
