The Fira to Oia hike is one of the best free experiences on Santorini. Recommended by virtually every guidebook, this walk is a succession of postcards: explore the villages of Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira while enjoying some of the most spectacular views on the island.
A little over 10 km long, the trail is a mix of paved pedestrian streets and dirt paths. It is fairly hilly with very little shade, so plan to start early in the day if you are doing it in summer.
Along the way, you can take a detour to Skaros Rock. It is a rocky peak below Imerovigli that I highly recommend.
If you have any doubts about the hike, know right away that it is absolutely worth doing. The Fira to Oia hike is far from being a tourist trap, and is without question a must-do on Santorini. It just requires a little preparation.
01Fira to Oia or Oia to Fira?
You can do the hike in either direction. Personally, I did it from Fira to Oia, and I think it was the best option. In this direction, it feels like there is slightly more downhill than uphill (Fira being at a higher elevation than Oia). The view over Oia and the Caldera is truly magnificent throughout the entire hike, and you can end the day exploring Oia, its shops and restaurants. Not to mention the legendary sunset.
For the return, you can take a taxi. It costs around €30 from Oia to Fira, and they are available at any time. Bring cash, because taxis on Santorini (and more broadly in Greece) don't accept card payments. (You can ask them to stop quickly at an ATM too, don't worry).
You can also take the bus back for €2, but do check the timetables. Buses run roughly every 30-45 minutes in season.
02Key Information About the Hike
Distance: 10 km Duration: 3 to 5 hours Difficulty: Easy Best time: Morning and late afternoon are the best times to avoid the midday heat (especially during summer months).
03What to Wear and What to Bring
The hike is about 10 km long and will take you around 4 hours. There are essentials you must not forget. Apart from a camera which is essential for capturing the incredible panoramas, you absolutely must bring enough water. The temperature can rise quickly on Santorini, the sun is scorching and shade is virtually non-existent on the trail. Moreover, it is impossible to buy water on the second half of the hike, so make sure you always have enough water bottles with you. I recommend at least two litres per person.

It is very important to protect yourself from the sun, especially in summer. So sunglasses, a hat, cap and sunscreen are just as vital as water. Don't end up with sunstroke or red as a lobster and ruin your trip over something so simple.
Finally, I would say it is best to wear a good pair of shoes. If possible, hiking shoes with good support and a comfortable sole: the path from Fira to Oia is not paved and at times you will find yourself slipping on dirt and stone paths on a hillside. Personally, I did it in flip-flops. It was not a good idea, but it is doable. Be aware of the risks.
For clothing, shorts and a breezy top would be perfect, as would a summer dress. Just avoid anything really tight, because you are guaranteed to sweat along the way!
04The Stages from Fira to Oia
Fira
Here you are, ready to start the hike. The starting point is at the Atlantis Hotel in Fira. However, you can simply start wherever you like in the town of Fira. Exploring the towns and villages along the hike is actually one of the main highlights, so don't hesitate to leave the official trail if you spot something interesting.
Fira is the capital of Santorini, and you will find plenty of paved alleyways, trendy bars and restaurants, and shops. I liked the vibe, but it's not my favourite village on Santorini. There is also a museum where you can admire ancient relics from the island, and you will find the old port below the village which is the departure point for boat excursions around Santorini.
Once in Fira, head north towards Imerovigli. To easily find your way during the hike, just keep the Caldera and the sea on your left. There are occasional trail markers, but they are fairly rare.
Firostefani
Firostefani is the second village you will pass through on this hike. In fact, it is more of an extension of Fira, and you won't even notice you have entered it.
Firostefani sits a bit higher than Fira and will be your first uphill section of the day. But the view from the top is great, and you can see all the way to the Akrotiri lighthouse in the distance.
While passing through Firostefani, I recommend stopping at the Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary: the three bells of Thira at Agios Theodoros. The viewpoint from the car park east of the church is magnificent.
Imerovigli
There are several paths through Imerovigli. I recommend having fun exploring the village and choosing your own route. You will pass stunning hotels, restaurants and bars that have – in my opinion – the best views on the entire island.
The name Imerovigli comes from the word vigla, meaning viewpoint. As you can imagine, that is exactly what you find here. With numerous viewpoints, magnificent villas with pools overlooking the sea and a breathtaking view of the caldera, I assure you this is one of the best places to stay on Santorini.
There is also another beautiful blue-domed church to photograph in Imerovigli. It is called Anastasi Church and you can find a small path that lets you photograph it from above.
If you are feeling peckish and running low on water, I strongly recommend stocking up in Imerovigli. After this village, the hike becomes quite arid with only one or two cafes that are not always open. It is best to avoid taking the risk and grab some provisions to last you until Oia.
Skaros Rock
If you wish, you can take the detour to Skaros Rock. This adds between 40 and 60 minutes to your hike, and you simply continue along the pedestrian path. I refer you to this article and this video to learn more about Skaros.
Imerovigli to Oia
Continue your walk through the village of Imerovigli. Sometimes it is a real maze and you will have to choose between several paths. But don't worry, as long as you keep the caldera on your left and head north. You're going the right way.
This is where the hike gets a bit tougher. The beautifully paved path turns to loose gravel and dirt. This section from Imerovigli to Oia is the longest part of the hike, but also the most beautiful. Along the way, you will have an incredibly gorgeous view of the caldera with Oia in the distance. If you started your hike early in the morning, you should still be fairly cool. If, like us, you do it in the middle of the afternoon: be ready to get hot.
When you reach the Avalon Resort & Spa, the paths converge into a single trail that you simply follow past numerous resorts and hotels. You then arrive at the church of Profitis Ilias at the top of the hill.
Just before reaching the church of Profitis Ilias, the path forks. Stay left to continue to the church and get a breathtaking view of the caldera. Go right if you want an easier path. But you will miss part of what makes this hike so famous.
Next comes a small descent. This is probably the trickiest part of the hike, as it is full of small rocks that are easy to slip on. But don't worry, it remains accessible to everyone. Once at the bottom, you will rejoin the road for a section of about 200 metres. The trail picks up again just after the small cafe/snack bar.

If you want to stop for a meal, I warmly recommend Steki Tou Nikou. It is a small restaurant about 500 metres from the trail serving delicious food with a superb view at very reasonable prices!
The Boring Part
After rejoining the trail, you hit the most challenging section. It is a climb on a rocky, dusty path with no shade. There is no particularly noteworthy view, and this part can feel monotonous and dull. However, once you reach the top, you begin the best part of the hike: the descent into Oia.
Along the way, you will pass the Church of Panagia. The view and panorama are sublime at 360°, so take it all in!
It is a living postcard: the backdrop of every Santorini postcard with its whitewashed buildings, windmills and blue ocean. The sunsets from Oia are world-famous and among the most beautiful in Europe.
Here you will find a breathtaking view of the Palia and Nea Kameni volcano, as well as the distant island of Thirassia which I find incredible.
Among the unmissable sights in Oia, make sure to visit the famous church of Ekklisia Panagia Platsani, and some of the magnificent caldera viewpoints. (The one from the Fort of Saint Nikolas is particularly lovely).
If you still have legs, you can also descend the 300 steps to the small port of Ammoudi. You can watch fishing boats, visit one of Santorini's most beautiful beaches, and eat at the restaurants. By the way, I really advise against Ammoudi Fish Tavern, which is a genuine overpriced tourist trap.
I hope you now feel ready to do the Fira to Oia hike. Although it is long, it is not too difficult and can easily be done by anyone in reasonable physical condition. I think it is a must-do on Santorini, and it's free. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I will try to answer as soon as possible!
05When to Do the Hike: Seasonal Guide
Best Period (April-May and September-October)
Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions: mild temperatures (18-25°C), fewer crowds and perfect light for photography. In April-May, you will enjoy Cycladic wildflowers lining the trail.
Acceptable Period (March and November)
Possible but unpredictable. Cooler temperatures (15-20°C), risk of strong winds and some establishments closed. Bring a light jacket.

08Most Asked Questions About the Fira to Oia Hike
The Fira to Oia (or Oia to Fira) hike on Santorini generally takes around 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and the number of breaks you take.
It is considered easy to moderate difficulty, as there are some fairly steep slopes and rough terrain. I recommend being in reasonable physical shape and avoiding doing it in extreme heat, particularly in summer.
There are some toilets and facilities along the hike, but they are limited. I recommend bringing water and snacks with you and using the toilets before starting.
The best time to hike from Fira to Oia is from April to October, when the weather is more comfortable. Avoid doing it (as we did) in the middle of the afternoon during the hottest months of July and August.
While it is possible to hike from Fira to Oia at night, I would not recommend it. The trail can be tricky in the dark and may not be well lit. You can do it very early in the morning at sunrise for pleasant temperatures and a superb view.
