Updated: 20 March 2026
The Fira to Oia hike is Santorini's unmissable free experience: 10.5 km along the caldera, through four iconic villages. Here is everything you need to know to make the most of it in 2026.
Roughly 10.5 km long, the trail is a mix of paved pedestrian streets and packed-earth paths. It is fairly hilly with very little shade, so plan to start early in the day if you are hiking in summer.
Along the way, you have the option to take a detour to Skaros Rock. It is a rocky promontory below Imerovigli that I highly recommend.
If you have any doubts about the hike, know right away that it is absolutely worth doing. The Fira to Oia hike is far from being a tourist trap, and it is without a doubt a must-do in Santorini. It just requires a little bit of preparation.

01Fira to Oia or Oia to Fira?
It is possible to do the hike in both directions. Personally, I did it from Fira to Oia, and I believe it was the best option. In this direction, it feels like there is slightly more downhill than uphill (Fira sits at a higher elevation than Oia). The views over Oia and the caldera are truly stunning throughout the entire hike, and you can finish the day exploring Oia, its shops and restaurants. Not to mention the legendary sunset.
For the return trip, you can take a taxi. It costs between 25 and 30 € from Oia to Fira, and they are available at any time. Bring cash just in case. More and more taxis accept contactless payment in Greece, but it is not yet standard in Santorini. (You can also ask them to make a quick stop at an ATM, don't worry about it).
You can also take the bus back for 2 €, but pay close attention to the schedule. Buses run approximately every 30-45 minutes during the season.
If you have heard about the seismic activity that affected Santorini in early 2025, rest assured: the situation has been back to normal since May 2025. The trail from Fira to Oia is fully accessible and all ports, shops and accommodations on the island have been operating normally since the 2025 season.

03What to wear and bring
The hike is roughly 10.5 km long and will take you about 4 hours. There are therefore a few essentials you should not forget. Besides the camera — essential for capturing the incredible panoramas you are about to discover — you must absolutely bring enough water. The temperature can rise quickly in Santorini, the sun is scorching and there is virtually no shade on the trail. Moreover, it is impossible to buy water on the second half of the hike, so make sure you always have enough water bottles with you. I recommend at least two litres per person.

It is very important to protect yourself from the sun, especially in summer. So sunglasses, a hat, a cap and sunscreen are just as vital as water. Don't end up with sunstroke or burnt to a crisp — don't ruin your trip over something so avoidable.
Finally, I would say it is best to wear a good pair of shoes. If possible, hiking shoes with good ankle support and comfortable soles: the path from Fira to Oia is unpaved and at times you will find yourself sliding on dirt and stone trails on a hillside. Personally, I did it in flip-flops — it was not a great idea, but it is doable. Be aware of the risks.
As for clothing, shorts and a light top would be perfect, as would a summer dress. Just avoid anything really tight, because you are guaranteed to sweat along the way!
Do you need a guide?
The trail can easily be done independently, but a guided hike adds real value if you want to understand the island's volcanic history and not miss the best viewpoints. Several local agencies offer small-group excursions (6-12 people) with return transfer included.
Expect to pay between 65 and 85 € per person for a guided hike of about 4 hours, including hotel pick-up, water, a snack and return transfer from Oia. It is a particularly interesting option if you are travelling solo or do not want to deal with the return logistics.

04The stages from Fira to Oia
Fira
Here you are, ready to finally start the hike. The starting point is near the Atlantis Hotel in Fira. However, you can simply start from anywhere in the town of Fira. Exploring the towns and villages along the trail is actually one of the main highlights, so do not hesitate to leave the official hiking path if you spot something interesting.
Warning: if you type 'Fira Oia' into Google Maps, it will show you the driving route. The hiking trail follows the caldera and takes a completely different path. Simply keep the sea and the caldera on your left.
Fira is the capital of Santorini, and you will find all kinds of cobbled alleyways, trendy bars and restaurants, and shops. I liked the vibe, but it is not my favourite village in Santorini. You will also find a museum where you can admire ancient relics from the island, as well as the old port below the village — the starting point for boat excursions around Santorini.
Once in Fira, you need to walk north towards Imerovigli. To find your way easily during the hike, simply keep the caldera and the sea on your left. There are occasional trail markers, but they are relatively rare.
Firostefani
Firostefani is the second village you will pass through on this hike. In fact, it is more of an extension of Fira, and you might not even notice you have entered it.
Firostefani sits slightly higher than Fira and will be your first uphill section of the day. But the view from the top is fantastic, and you can see all the way to the Akrotiri lighthouse in the distance.
As you cross Firostefani, I recommend stopping at the Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary: the three bells of Thira at Agios Theodoros. The viewpoint is from the parking area east of the church and is absolutely beautiful.
Imerovigli
There are several paths running through Imerovigli. I suggest having fun exploring the village and choosing your own route. You will pass along stunning hotels, restaurants and bars that — in my opinion — boast the best views on the entire island.
The name Imerovigli comes from the word vigla, meaning lookout point. As you can imagine, that is exactly what you find here. With numerous viewpoints, magnificent villas with pools overlooking the sea and a breathtaking view of the caldera, I can assure you this is one of the best places to stay in Santorini.
There is also another beautiful blue-domed church to photograph in Imerovigli. It is called Anastasi Church and you can find a small path that lets you photograph it from above.
If you are feeling peckish or running low on water, I strongly recommend stocking up in Imerovigli. After this village, the hike becomes quite barren with only one or two cafés that are not always open. It is best to avoid the risk and grab a few provisions to last you until Oia.
Skaros Rock
If you wish, you can take the detour to Skaros Rock. This adds between 40 and 60 minutes to your hike, and you just need to continue along the pedestrian path. I point you to this article and this video to learn more about Skaros.
Imerovigli to Oia
Continue your walk through the village of Imerovigli. At times, it is a real maze and you will have to choose between several paths. But do not worry — as long as you keep the caldera on your left and head north, you are going in the right direction.
This is where the hike gets a little tougher. The beautifully paved path turns into loose gravel and dirt. This section from Imerovigli to Oia is the longest part of the hike, but it is also the most scenic. As you walk, you will have an incredibly beautiful view of the caldera with Oia in the distance. If you started your hike early in the morning, you should still be fairly cool. If, like us, you are doing it in the middle of the afternoon: be prepared to get hot.
Once you reach the Avalon Resort & Spa, the trails converge into a single path that you simply follow past numerous resorts and hotels. You then arrive at the church of Profitis Ilias at the top of the hill.
Just before reaching the church of Profitis Ilias, the path forks. Stay left to continue to the church and enjoy a stunning view of the caldera. Go right if you want an easier path. But you will miss part of what makes this hike so famous.
Next, a short descent awaits. This is probably the trickiest part of the hike, as it is full of small rocks that are easy to slip on. But do not worry, it remains accessible to everyone. Once you reach the bottom of the descent, you will rejoin the road for a section of about 200 metres. The trail resumes just past the small café/snack bar.

If you want to stop for a meal, I warmly recommend Steki Tou Nikou. It is a small restaurant about 500 metres off the trail that serves delicious food. And a superb view at a very reasonable price!
The boring section
After rejoining the trail, you tackle the most demanding section of the walk. It is a climb on a rocky, dusty path with no shade. There are no particularly noteworthy views, and this part can feel monotonous and boring. However, once you reach the top, you begin the best part of the hike: the descent towards Oia.
Along the way, you will pass the Church of Panagia. The view and panorama are sublime at 360°, so take it all in!
It is a living postcard: this is the backdrop of every postcard with its whitewashed buildings, windmills and blue ocean. The sunsets from Oia are famous worldwide and are among the most beautiful in Europe.
Here, you will find a stunning view of the Palia and Nea Kameni volcano, as well as the distant island of Thirassia, which I find incredible.
Among the unmissable sights in Oia, make sure to visit the famous church of Ekklisia Panagia Platsani, and some of the magnificent caldera viewpoints. (The one from Saint Nikolas Fort is particularly lovely).
If you still have legs, you can also descend the 300 steps to the small port of Ammoudi. You can watch fishing boats, enjoy one of Santorini's most beautiful beaches, and eat at the restaurants. By the way, I really advise against Ammoudi Fish Tavern — it is an overpriced tourist trap.
I hope you now feel ready to tackle the Fira to Oia hike. Although the hike is long, it is not too difficult and can easily be done by anyone in reasonable physical shape. I think it is an absolute must-do in Santorini, and best of all, it is free. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I will do my best to reply quickly!
