When you think of Bali, you probably picture the Indonesian island famous for its heavenly beaches, terraced rice paddies and majestic temples. But did you know there is another Bali, every bit as enchanting, on the largest Greek island? Welcome to Bali, in Crete!

How to get to Bali, Crete
Bali enjoys a prime location on the northern coast of Crete, halfway between two of the island's main towns: Heraklion and Rethymno. The village is easy to reach thanks to the national road linking these two cities to Chania, in the west of the island.
By car
If you choose to drive, you'll reach Bali in no time from Heraklion or Rethymno. From Heraklion airport, allow approximately 45 minutes to cover the 46 kilometres that separate you from Bali. The road is well maintained and offers beautiful views over the Aegean Sea.
From Rethymno, the journey is even shorter: a short half-hour is enough to cover the 30 kilometres to Bali. You follow the northern coast of the island, with sweeping views of the Cretan mountains and the little traditional villages dotted along the way.
Do plan your route carefully before setting off, and don't hesitate to stop at the designated lay-bys to make the most of the scenery.
By bus
If you prefer public transport, know that Bali is very well served by the KTEL bus network that criss-crosses the island of Crete. Regular buses connect Heraklion and Rethymno to Bali, with stops right next to the village.
From Heraklion bus station, buses leave several times per day for Rethymno and stop at Bali. The journey takes approximately one hour and drops you at the entrance to the village, a few minutes' walk from the beaches and accommodation.
If you're coming from Rethymno, KTEL buses also run to Bali several times per day. The trip takes only about forty minutes and gives you a lovely opportunity to discover the Cretan landscapes without having to drive. ♂
Once at the Bali bus stop, you can easily reach your accommodation or the beach on foot. The village is compact and most points of interest are just a few minutes' walk away. ♀

Discover Bali's dream beaches
The charming village of Bali, tucked away on the northern coast of Crete, is a real treasure chest that holds some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Each of the coves that line the village has its own character, offering visitors a unique experience.
Livadi Beach: the buzz of the big beach

Livadi Beach is the largest and liveliest of Bali's beaches. Stretching over several hundred metres, it offers plenty of room to stretch out on the golden sand and soak up the Cretan sun. In high season, the beach comes alive with visitors who come to enjoy its crystal-clear waters and the water sports on offer, such as water skiing and paddleboarding. ♂
Lined with tavernas, cafés and bars, Livadi Beach is the perfect place to spend a whole day by the water, alternating between swimming, relaxing on the sand and lunch with a view over the Aegean Sea. As evening falls, watch a magnificent sunset from the beach and extend the magic with a drink in one of the lively bars.
Varkotopos Beach: an oasis of tranquillity

For those looking for a more intimate atmosphere, head to Varkotopos Beach. Nestled at the foot of a steep hill, this small sand-and-pebble beach offers a peaceful, unspoilt setting. The water here is a deep, translucent blue, perfect for a relaxing swim or a snorkelling session.
Less crowded than Livadi Beach, Varkotopos is the ideal spot to recharge in peace, lulled by the gentle sound of the waves. A few tavernas and cafés line the beach, offering a welcome break in the shade of the trees. It's also a favourite with families, thanks to its shallow waters and serene atmosphere.
Limani Beach: the heart of Cretan authenticity ⚓

Also known as "Harbour Beach", Limani Beach lies right next to Bali's port. This modestly sized beach has an authentic charm, with colourful little fishing boats moored nearby. ⛵ The atmosphere is peaceful, inviting you to unwind and simply take it all in.
From Limani Beach, you can watch the comings and goings of the fishermen heading out to sea or bringing back the day's catch. It's also a prime spot to sample freshly caught seafood in one of the family-run tavernas lining the beach.
Karavostasi Beach: my absolute favourite

Karavostasi Beach is, in my opinion, the most beautiful beach in Bali. A little slice of paradise away from the bustle, it has to be earned: you need to take a small coastal path to reach it. But the effort is well worth it!
Nestled between two cliffs, Karavostasi offers a natural setting of striking beauty. The golden sand contrasts with the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, creating a picture-postcard landscape. The beach is small and intimate, fringed by a few olive trees that provide welcome shade during the hottest hours of the day.
Here, time seems to stand still. It's the perfect place to recharge, far from the crowds and the noise. Bring your mask and snorkel: Karavostasi's crystal-clear waters teem with marine life to observe. At sunset, the show is spectacular, with the cliffs taking on golden and orange hues. A magical moment to savour in complete simplicity.

Explore the surrounding area
Bali isn't only an idyllic seaside destination, it's also an ideal base for exploring the hidden treasures of Crete. The surrounding area is packed with historic sites, picturesque traditional villages and breathtaking natural landscapes. Get ready to dive into the heart of authentic Crete! 🇬🇷
Arkadi monastery, a landmark of Cretan history

Just a 30-minute drive from Bali, the Arkadi monastery is a must-see for all history lovers. Founded in the 16th century, this fortified monastery played a crucial role in Cretan resistance to Ottoman occupation.
The monastery became a symbol of the struggle for independence in 1866, when nearly a thousand Cretans, mostly women and children, took refuge there to escape the Ottoman troops. Besieged and refusing to surrender, they chose to sacrifice themselves by blowing up the gunpowder stores rather than submit to the invader.
Today, Arkadi monastery is a moving place of remembrance, where you can feel the weight of history at every step. Visit the Byzantine church, admire the ancient frescoes and wander through the monastery's passageways, silent witnesses to that tragic event. A museum retraces the history of the site and pays tribute to those who gave their lives for freedom. 🇬🇷
Traditional villages to discover: Margarites and Spili

Set off to discover the traditional villages tucked into the Cretan hills, true gems of authenticity. About a 30-minute drive from Bali, Margarites is renowned for its age-old craft: pottery.
Stroll through the cobbled lanes of this charming village, where potters' workshops line up one after another, displaying ceramics in bright colours and traditional patterns. Meet the artisans who keep this ancient art alive and don't hesitate to bring home a one-of-a-kind souvenir, shaped directly by the expert hands of Margarites' potters.
A little further on, about a 45-minute drive away, the village of Spili will win you over with its authentic charm. The village's central square is adorned with a magnificent 16th-century Venetian fountain, where cool water flows from the mouths of 19 carved lions. Take the time to sit in the shade of the centuries-old plane trees and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this little Cretan gem.
Spili's lanes are full of small shops selling local products: honey, olive oil, cheeses… Enough to delight your taste buds and bring a little of the flavour of Crete home with you.
Panoramic hikes: between sea and mountains ⛰

Nature and hiking enthusiasts will be spoilt by the area around Bali. The coastal paths offer breathtaking views over the bay and the beaches below. Around a bend, you'll discover secret coves reachable only on foot, true havens of peace where you can swim in turquoise waters far from the crowds.
For the more adventurous, the surrounding mountains offer more demanding hikes through olive groves and fragrant pines. Climb to the summit of Mount Kouloukonas, at 1,076 metres above sea level, to enjoy an exceptional panorama over the northern coast of Crete.
Along your hike, you'll pass through traditional villages perched on the mountainsides, where time seems to have stood still. Meet the locals, taste local specialities in an authentic taverna and soak up the Cretan art of living. 🇬🇷
Whether you're a history buff, a lover of traditions or a hiker at heart, the area around Bali is full of treasures to explore. Let yourself be carried along Crete's winding roads, discovering stunning landscapes and villages where authenticity reigns supreme.
Get your walking shoes and your camera ready and set off on an adventure! Authentic Crete is waiting for you. 🇬🇷 And when evening comes, you can enjoy a magical sunset over Bali bay, with a plate of mezze and a glass of raki, for a 100% Cretan day.
