In May, Crete enjoys 23 to 24°C in the afternoon, 2 to 4 days of rain across the month and a sea that warms from about 17°C to 21°C. Samaria Gorge (15 km, €10) opens depending on the state of the trail: on 19 May in 2026. The boats to Balos (€40 + €1 tax) are running again, and Knossos and Spinalonga (€20) are open. Car hire costs around €30 to €55 a day.

Updated: 28 October 2026

May is the month when Crete slips into summer without any of its drawbacks yet. Days climb to around 23 to 24°C in Heraklion, it rains on average two to four days over the whole month, and the sun shines for about ten hours a day. The hills are still green, and the car parks at Elafonisi or Knossos are a far cry from the July crush.

The only real catch is the sea. It averages around 19°C, cooler at the start of the month and more pleasant at the end. You can swim, but in the first days you will not stay in long. If you are mainly after hiking, archaeological sites and quiet beaches, May is one of the best months of the year. If you dream of long swims in warm water, aim for the end of the month instead, or September.

In this guide, I cover the weather week by week, what is open (and what is not yet), the month's festivals, a 7-day itinerary and the budget to plan for. To compare with the other months, our guide on the best time to visit Crete sums up the whole year.

Weather in Crete in May: what to expect

May is a month of transition. The last spring showers become rare, temperatures rise steadily and the sky is usually clear. Heraklion's climate averages give highs of around 23 to 24°C, lows of 14 to 16°C, about fifteen millimetres of rain over the month and around 10 hours of sunshine a day. The UV index already reaches 9 (very high): the May sun burns just as much as the summer sun, even when the air feels mild.

Early and late May: two different moods

The first ten days of May often feel like a glorious spring: 20 to 22°C in the afternoon, evenings that cool down quickly, the odd shower or windy day. From the third week onwards, temperatures regularly brush 25°C, and a few hotter days can arrive when a southerly wind blows.

North coast or south coast?

The north coast (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos) is the most exposed to the winds coming off the Aegean. The south coast, facing the Libyan Sea and sheltered by the mountains, is often slightly warmer and drier: this is where you will find the first proper beach days. In the mountains, however, it is noticeably cooler. At the start of Samaria Gorge, at around 1,250 m above sea level, a fleece is no luxury early in the morning.

Swimming in May: fresh but swimmable

Yes, you can swim in May, but the water is still fresh. In Chania, the average sea temperature is around 19°C over the month, with a low of about 16°C and a high of about 22°C. In early May, expect more like 17 to 18°C: a bracing dip of a few minutes. By late May, at 20 to 21°C, you can start swimming properly.

Choose sheltered, shallow coves, which warm up faster, and swim in the middle of the afternoon. Shallow lagoons such as Balos and Elafonisi are, in that respect, more pleasant in May than pebble beaches that shelve steeply.

Why May is one of the best months for Crete

Landscapes still green and in bloom

In spring, Crete looks nothing like the scorched island of late summer. In May, the roadsides, olive groves and plateaus are still in bloom: poppies, daisies, yellow broom and flowering herbs. It is also the end of the wild orchid season, which enthusiasts come to see every spring.

Hiking before the real heat

Walking 15 km through a gorge at 35°C is no fun at all. In May, temperatures are still suited to long days of walking, springs and streams are still flowing, and the gorges are less busy than in July. It is the best time to fit several hikes into the same week.

Quieter archaeological sites

The Palace of Knossos and the fortress of Spinalonga draw huge crowds in high summer. In May, cruise passengers and large groups are already there on some days, but the numbers are nothing like July and August.

Shoulder-season prices

May is one of the best value months. Hotels are still charging their pre-season rates, car hire costs much less than in July and August, and flights have not yet reached summer prices.

What is open (or not yet) in May

Samaria Gorge

Samaria National Park is officially open from 1 May to 31 October, from 7am to 3pm, but the actual opening date depends each year on the state of the trail after winter. In 2026, the opening planned for early May was postponed: repairs to the storm-damaged trail were still under way in mid-April, and the gorge only reopened on Tuesday 19 May.

Entry costs €10. The hike is about 15 km to Agia Roumeli (13 km inside the park, then 2 km to the village), takes 5 to 7 hours and ends with a boat ride on the Libyan Sea. If you are travelling in early May, keep a plan B: Imbros Gorge, open all year except in heavy rain, is about 8 km long and costs €5 in 2026. You will find all the details in our guide to hiking Samaria Gorge.

Boats to Balos and Chrissi

Cruises from the port of Kissamos to Gramvousa island and Balos lagoon run from May to October. The published adult fare is €40 (€45 from 15 July to 15 September), plus €1 municipal tax. In May, there are sometimes fewer departures than in summer and rough seas can cancel a trip on windy days: book with a spare day in your itinerary.

In the south-east, boats to Chrissi island leave from Ierapetra (around €40 to €45 return). Be aware that since 2025, a regional decree has banned landing on the island. The trip therefore comes down to a swim from the boat, in water that is still fresh in May. Check with the Ierapetra operators when departures resume.

Sites, museums and tavernas

The major sites are open: Spinalonga has welcomed visitors since 1 April (8.30am to 6pm, €20), and Knossos (€20) and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (€20) operate as normal. New for 2026: the Cave of Zeus, on the Lassithi Plateau, reopened on 29 May after two years of closure (8.30am to 3.30pm, closed on Tuesdays). On the south coast, most beach tavernas and small family hotels have reopened for the season, although some very remote places only open in June. On the north coast and in the towns, everything is up and running.

Festivals and traditions in Crete in May

May Day and flower wreaths

1 May, or Protomagia, is a public holiday in Greece. Tradition has it that people head to the countryside to pick wild flowers and weave a wreath, which they then hang on the door or balcony. According to custom, the wreaths stay up until the feast of St John at the end of June, when they are burnt in the festival bonfires. On that day, country tavernas are packed and public services are closed.

The anniversary of the Battle of Crete

From 20 May to 1 June 1941, Crete was the scene of the first major airborne invasion in history. British, Australian, New Zealand and Greek troops, helped by Cretan civilians, held out against German paratroopers before the island fell. Every year, the Chania region commemorates the battle around 20 May.

In 2026, for the 85th anniversary, the ceremonies ran from 17 to 24 May: a flag raising at Firkas Fortress in Chania, a parade of traditional associations along the old harbour, a Greek and New Zealand ceremony at Galatas in the early evening of 20 May, a service at the German war cemetery in Maleme and a closing ceremony at the Maleme airfield memorial. They are open to the public and lead to occasional road closures in Chania.

Orthodox Easter, sometimes in May

Orthodox Easter, the biggest celebration of the year in Greece, follows a different calendar from the Western one. In some years it falls in early May: it did on 5 May 2024, and it will on 2 May 2027. In 2026, it took place on 12 April, and in 2028 it will fall on 16 April. When it falls in May, Holy Week transforms the island: Good Friday processions, midnight mass on Saturday, lamb on the spit on Sunday. Flights and accommodation sell out fast, and Easter Monday is a public holiday.

What to do in Crete in May

Hike the gorges

May is gorge season. Samaria, as soon as it opens, remains the great classic of the west. Imbros, shorter and easier to organise by car from the Sfakia area, makes an excellent alternative. In the east, Richtis Gorge, near Exo Mouliana, leads in about 3 km to a waterfall and then a beach: in spring, the waterfall is far more spectacular than at the end of summer.

Enjoy beaches that are still quiet

In May, the most famous beaches regain some of their calm. Elafonisi, with its pinkish sand and shallow water, can be visited without the summer queues of cars. Balos can be reached by boat from Kissamos or on foot from the car park. In the south, Preveli beach and its palm grove are a lush green setting in spring, with the river still flowing down to the sea.

Visit Knossos and Spinalonga without the crowds

The Minoan palace of Knossos lies about 5 km from the centre of Heraklion. Get there at opening time, then carry on to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. In the east, Spinalonga, a former leper colony from 1903 to 1957, is about a 10-minute boat ride from Plaka (around €12 return). In May, the morning boats are the quietest.

A 7-day itinerary idea for May

This itinerary starts in Chania and crosses the island from west to east, with a return flight from Heraklion. It assumes you have a hire car. Driving times are given as a rough guide.

DayPlanNightDriving
Day 1Arrive in Chania, old town and Venetian harbourChaniaabout 15 km from the airport
Day 2Samaria Gorge if open, otherwise Imbros GorgeChaniaabout 42 km to Omalos (bus recommended for Samaria)
Day 3Boat to Gramvousa and Balos from KissamosKissamosabout 42 km, 45 min
Day 4Elafonisi in the morning, Chrysoskalitissa MonasteryKissamosabout 85 km return, 2 h 15
Day 5Drive to Rethymno, afternoon at PreveliRethymnoabout 105 km then 37 km, 2 h 30 in total
Day 6Knossos at opening time, Heraklion Archaeological MuseumHeraklionabout 79 km, 1 h 15
Day 7Plaka and Spinalonga, back to Heraklion airportabout 150 km return, 2 h 30

If you are travelling in early May and Samaria is not open yet, simply swap Day 2 for a day on the Akrotiri peninsula or in Imbros Gorge.

Budget: how much does Crete cost in May?

May sits between the low and shoulder seasons. Prices vary with the exact dates: Orthodox Easter week and the May bank holidays are more expensive.

ItemMayJuly and August
Simple room or studio, per night€40 to €60€65 to €90
3-star hotel or apartment with pool€55 to €80€110 to €160
4-star seafront hotel€90 to €150€220 to €400
Small hire car, per day€30 to €55€55 to €90
Taverna meal (starter, main, house wine)€15 to €22 per person€15 to €22 per person
Knossos, Heraklion museum, Spinalonga€20 each€20 each

When it comes to booking, I recommend securing the car and accommodation two to three months in advance, especially if your trip falls over Orthodox Easter or around 1 May. Boat trips, on the other hand, can be booked a few days ahead, depending on the weather.

Practical tips for a trip in May

  • A jacket for the evenings: evenings are still cool in early May, especially by the sea when it is windy and in the mountains. A light fleece or a windproof jacket will do.
  • Sun cream, seriously: with a UV index of 9, you burn as quickly in May as in July, especially when hiking and out on the water.
  • Good footwear: for the gorges, hiking boots with ankle support are better than trainers, as the ground is covered in loose stones.
  • Some slack in your itinerary: a windy day can cancel a boat, a rainy day can close a gorge. Keep one day flexible.
  • Check the public holidays: on 1 May and Orthodox Easter Monday, some sites and shops close or shorten their opening hours.

In May, Crete is as much for walking as for swimming: it is the month when the island reveals itself on foot, before summer hands it back to the beach.

Should you visit Crete in May?

Yes, without hesitation, if you love walking, sightseeing and photographing landscapes that are still green, with a few refreshing swims as a bonus. For a pure beach holiday, the end of the month is more pleasant than the start. To plan your trip, start with our guide to Crete, then compare it with Crete in September, the other ideal month of the year, when the sea is at its warmest and the summer crowds have gone home.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but the water is still fresh: about 17 to 18°C in early May and 20 to 21°C at the end of May on the north coast. Shallow lagoons such as Balos or Elafonisi and sheltered coves warm up faster than pebble beaches.

The park is officially open from 1 May to 31 October, but the actual opening date depends on the state of the trail after winter. In 2026, the gorge only reopened on 19 May after repair works: check the official announcement before booking an excursion.

Heraklion's averages give around 23 to 24°C in the afternoon and 14 to 16°C at night. The start of the month is cooler (around 21 to 22°C), while the end of the month often approaches 25°C.

No, it is one of the best value months: a simple room costs around €40 to €60 a night and a small hire car around €30 to €55 a day, compared with €55 to €90 in summer. Orthodox Easter week, when it falls in May, is the exception.

Summer clothes for the daytime, a light jacket or fleece for the evenings and the mountains, hiking boots for the gorges and high-factor sun cream, as the UV index already reaches 9.
