A week in Crete for two can cost €1,600 or €7,000, flights included. The gap is not just down to how smart the hotel is: your departure date, when you book the car and the category of your accommodation matter just as much. Between a Paris to Heraklion flight in June and the same flight in August, the average price more than doubles.
2026 adds a few lines to keep an eye on: petrol costs more than €2.20 a litre on average in Greece at the end of September, the climate resilience tax climbs to €15 a night in 5-star hotels, and entry to Knossos, like the Heraklion museum, is now €20. Nothing insurmountable, as long as you know before you go.
This guide breaks down each item with prices checked in October 2026, suggests three profiles (shoestring, comfortable, luxury) and costs a 7-day trip for two in June, August and October. The figures are honest ranges, not promises: prices move, especially for flights and cars.
Flights: the first cost to watch
Crete has two main airports: Heraklion (Nikos Kazantzakis), in the north centre, the best served, and Chania, in the west, with more seasonal flights. From France, Belgium and Switzerland, direct flights mainly run between April and October, operated by low-cost airlines and charter flights. In winter, you often have to change in Athens.
The prices below are average return fares per person in economy, based on booking statistics published by comparison sites. The departure cities in the table, Paris, Lyon, Brussels and Geneva, are examples for travellers leaving from France, Belgium and Switzerland. The figures are there to frame a budget, not to predict the price you will find tomorrow.
| Departure | June | August | October | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | about €150 to €200 | about €300 to €400 | about €170 to €300 | The most competitive route, frequent direct flights to Heraklion |
| Lyon | about €120 to €180 | about €280 to €380 | about €160 to €280 | Seasonal direct flights to Heraklion and Chania |
| Brussels | about €160 to €220 | about €300 to €420 | about €180 to €300 | June is on average the cheapest month |
| Geneva | about €210 to €280 | about €330 to €450 | about €220 to €320 | Less choice, higher average prices |
Two benchmarks to put these ranges in context: the average observed price for a Paris to Heraklion return is around €161 in June and €352 in August, compared with about €174 in September. As for Chania, direct flights are rarer out of season and average October fares from Paris are noticeably higher (around €320).
I recommend booking 3 to 5 months ahead for July and August, comparing midweek departures, and checking the price of hold luggage before comparing two tickets: on low-cost airlines, it can add €60 to €100 per person to the return fare.
Accommodation: what a night costs by season and region
This is the most elastic item. According to 2026 figures, a mid-range double room costs about €90 to €140 a night in July and August, compared with €55 to €70 in May: the drop often reaches 40 to 50% between high summer and shoulder season. A simple guesthouse in high season starts at around €65 to €90, a hotel with a pool at around €110 to €160, and a three-bedroom villa rents for €250 to €500 a night.

| Type of accommodation | Low season (April, May, late October) | June, September, early October | July and August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple room or studio | €40 to €60 | €50 to €75 | €65 to €90 |
| 3-star hotel or flat with pool | €55 to €80 | €80 to €120 | €110 to €160 |
| 4-star seafront hotel | €90 to €150 | €140 to €250 | €220 to €400 |
| 5-star hotel or villa with pool | €200 to €350 | €300 to €500 | €400 and well beyond |
The regions where prices climb, and those where they stay sensible

- Elounda and Mirabello Bay: the highest concentration of 5-star resorts on the island. Prices here are the highest, but Agios Nikolaos, about ten kilometres away, has more affordable rooms.
- Chania (old town): in great demand in summer, the small hotels around the Venetian harbour are expensive for their size. Staying a few streets back from the harbour or in the coastal villages to the west brings the bill down.
- Heraklion and its coast (Hersonissos, Malia): plenty of supply, so prices are often more reasonable, especially in the large all-inclusive club hotels.
- Rethymno: a good compromise between old town, beach and price.
- South coast and inland (Plakias, Paleochora, Lassithi villages): the most affordable accommodation, with family-run rooms often managed by their owners.

The climate resilience tax: €2 to €15 a night
Since 1 January 2025, Greece has charged a climate crisis resilience tax, which replaced the old tourist tax. It is due per room and per night, not per person, and the amount depends on the official category of the property and the season. The amounts have not changed for 2026.
| Category | April to October | November to March |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2-star hotels, furnished rooms | €2 | €0.50 |
| 3-star hotel | €5 | €1.50 |
| 4-star hotel | €10 | €3 |
| 5-star hotel | €15 | €4 |
| Short-term rental (Airbnb style) | €8 | €2 |
| Detached house over 80 m², villa | €15 | €4 |
For a week in a 5-star hotel in June, that comes to €105; in a flat booked on a platform, €56. This tax is not always included in the price shown when you book: it is often paid on site, on arrival or departure. Campsites and youth hostels are exempt.
Car hire, fuel and tolls
Crete is about 260 km from east to west and public transport does not reach the most interesting beaches and villages. For most travellers, the car is the second biggest item in the budget, right after accommodation. All the practical details are in our guide to hiring a car in Crete; here are the figures to remember.

| Item | Low season (November to April) | May, June, October | July and August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small car, price per day | €20 to €35 | €30 to €55 | €55 to €90 |
| Zero-excess insurance, per day | €8 to €15 | €8 to €15 | €8 to €15 |
| Deposit blocked on a credit card | €300 to €800 | €300 to €800 | €300 to €800 |
Three things to check before you sign. The excess on basic insurance (CDW) is often between €500 and €1,500: a simple scratch on a dirt track can prove expensive without excess cover. The deposit almost always requires a credit card in the driver's name, as debit cards are refused at most desks. Finally, local hire companies in Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno are often 20 to 30% cheaper than the big brands for a comparable service.

Fuel: about €2.20 a litre
According to the European Commission's weekly Oil Bulletin, unleaded 95 cost an average of €2.205 a litre in Greece in the week of 28 September 2026, and diesel €2.216. Prices on the islands are often a little above the national average. For a week with 600 to 800 km of driving in a small car using 6 litres per 100 km, allow €80 to €110 for fuel.

Fill up before tackling the south coast: between Sfakia and Ierapetra, petrol stations are few and far between and the gap between two pumps can exceed 80 km.
No tolls in Crete
Good news for the budget: in 2026, there are no toll roads in Crete. The main northern highway (VOAK), linking Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, is free. It is being upgraded and the future Chania to Heraklion section will be run as a toll concession by its builder, but the works will stretch over several years. The only cost is paid parking in towns, around €1 to €2 an hour in town centre car parks.

Food and drink: the prices to know in 2026
Eating out in Crete remains affordable if you avoid the terraces on the most touristy seafronts. The island is also the European Region of Gastronomy in 2026, and village tavernas often serve generous dishes at reasonable prices. Prices have nonetheless risen noticeably: in Heraklion, a pita gyros has passed €6 in some places, while you can still find it for €3.50 or €4 elsewhere.

| What you order | Typical price in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Pita gyros or souvlaki | €3.50 to €6.50 |
| Freddo espresso or cappuccino | €3.50 to €5.50 |
| Greek coffee | €2.50 to €4.50 |
| Local beer on a terrace | €4 to €7 |
| Small bottle of water (50 cl) from a kiosk | about €0.50 to €0.60 |
| Taverna meal (starter, main, house wine) | €15 to €22 per person |
| Meal in a touristy harbour | €30 to €45 per person |
| Supermarket shopping for self-catering | €10 to €15 per person per day |
A small cover charge (bread, sometimes oil or water) on the bill is common: it is not a tip. I recommend keeping one meal in two simple (gyros, bakery, a picnic of tomatoes, cheese and paximadia) and saving the taverna for the evening: it is the most effective way to stick to a small budget without going without.
Site entry fees and boat trips
The major archaeological sites have raised their prices in recent years. For a couple who want to see the highlights of the centre and east, the sightseeing budget quickly tops €100. The prices below are full prices, per person.

| Site or excursion | Price per person | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Palace of Knossos | €20 (€10 reduced) | Arrive at opening time in summer |
| Heraklion Archaeological Museum | €20 | Combine with Knossos on the same day |
| Spinalonga | €20 (€10 reduced) + boat | Open 1 April to 31 October, 8.30am to 6pm |
| Boat to Spinalonga | about €12 from Plaka, €14 from Elounda | From about €20 from Agios Nikolaos |
| Samaria Gorge | €10 | Allow extra for the return boat and the bus |
| Lato | €5 (€3 reduced) | 8.30am to 3.30pm, closed on Tuesdays |
| Panagia Kera (Kritsa) | €5 | 8.30am to 3.30pm, closed on Tuesdays |
| Boat to Balos and Gramvousa | about €40 to €45 (+ €1 tax) | From Kissamos, May to October |
| Boat to Chrissi | about €40 to €45 | From Ierapetra, swimming from the boat only |
The Palace of Knossos and the Heraklion museum are easy to combine in a day: for two, allow €80 in entry fees for both. For Spinalonga, leaving from Plaka is the shortest crossing (about 10 minutes) and the cheapest: our guide to visiting Spinalonga sets out the options. On Chrissi, remember that landing has been banned since 2025 by regional decree: the excursion takes the form of a cruise with swimming at anchor, as we explain in our article on Chrissi Island.
At Balos, if you drive along the dirt track rather than taking the boat, allow a few euros for the access fee and parking, plus a walk of about 20 minutes down. On organised beaches, two sunbeds and an umbrella usually cost €10 to €20 a day, up to around €20 on very busy beaches such as Vai.
Three budget profiles, item by item
Here is how a 7-night trip for two in June breaks down across three ways of travelling. The amounts include flights from Paris and the climate tax, but not travel insurance or personal spending.
| Item (7 days for two, June) | Shoestring | Comfortable | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return flights (2 people) | €300 | €360 | €600 |
| Accommodation (7 nights) | €385 (studio at €55) | €770 (3-star at €110) | €3,150 (5-star at €450) |
| Climate tax | €14 | €35 | €105 |
| Car and insurance | €245 (small car, basic insurance) | €385 (zero excess) | €665 (higher category) |
| Fuel | €80 | €100 | €130 |
| Meals | €420 (€30 per person per day) | €630 (€45) | €1,400 (€100) |
| Sites and museums | €80 | €145 | €145 |
| Boat trips | €0 | €80 | about €400 (private trip) |
| Beach and extras | €40 | €100 | €200 |
| Indicative total | about €1,600 | about €2,600 | about €6,800 |
The shoestring budget means booking flights and car early, sleeping in family-run rooms or studios, cooking some of your meals and limiting paid visits to Knossos and the Heraklion museum. The comfortable profile is what I recommend for a first trip: a 3-star hotel or a flat with a pool, zero-excess insurance, a taverna every evening and two or three headline visits. The luxury budget comes down almost entirely to the hotel: a 5-star resort in Elounda can on its own cost more than the rest of the budget.
Costed example: 7 days for two in June, August and October
Same comfortable profile, same itinerary (Heraklion, Knossos, Spinalonga, a boat trip, a few beaches), three different dates. The result shows how much the season weighs on the bill.

| Item (2 people, 7 nights) | June | August | October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights from Paris | €360 | €760 | €440 |
| 3-star hotel or flat | €770 (€110 a night) | €1,120 (€160) | €630 (€90) |
| Climate tax (3-star) | €35 | €35 | €35 |
| Car and zero-excess insurance | €385 | €595 | €350 |
| Fuel | €100 | €100 | €100 |
| Meals | €630 | €700 | €630 |
| Sites and museums | €145 | €145 | €145 |
| Boat trip | €80 | €80 | €80 |
| Beach and extras | €100 | €120 | €80 |
| Total | about €2,600 | about €3,650 | about €2,500 |
August costs about €1,050 to €1,150 more than June or October for exactly the same trip. Most of the difference comes from flights, accommodation and the car. October still pays the summer rate for the climate tax (until 31 October), but the sea is still warm at the start of the month and Spinalonga stays open until the end of October. To choose your dates with full knowledge, see our guide on when to go to Crete, and if a late-summer trip appeals, our article on Crete in September.
Payment, tipping and cash
Since 2024, all Greek businesses and service providers dealing with the public must accept card payments: tavernas, taxis, museums, archaeological sites, hire companies. In practice, cards work almost everywhere, even for a coffee. Still, keep €50 to €100 in cash for small village tavernas, kiosks, sunbeds on some beaches and tips. Cash payments of more than €500 between a customer and a business are prohibited.

As for tipping, nothing is compulsory: staff are salaried. The custom is to round up the bill or leave 5 to 10% when the service has been attentive. If you want it to really reach the waiter, leave it in cash rather than through the card machine.
One last item that often gets forgotten: travel insurance. It is not part of our calculations, but it covers what a bank card does not always take care of (high medical costs, repatriation, cancellation).

My tips for cutting your Crete budget

- Travel in June, or late September and early October: it is the most worthwhile tip, saving a couple about €1,000 compared with August.
- Book the car 3 months ahead: a small car goes from about €30 to €45 a day booked early to €65 to €100 at the last minute in summer.
- Compare local hire companies: often 20 to 30% cheaper, sometimes with zero-excess insurance included. Read carefully what it excludes (tyres, windscreen, underbody).
- Stay away from the most sought-after spots: Agios Nikolaos rather than Elounda, a village a few kilometres from Chania rather than the Venetian harbour.
- Choose accommodation with a kitchen: a homemade breakfast and lunch each day easily saves two people €30 to €40.
- Group your visits by region: fewer kilometres, less fuel (at €2.20 a litre, every unnecessary round trip costs you).
- Choose the public boat over a cruise: for Spinalonga, the shuttle from Plaka costs about €12, compared with €25 or more for a cruise from Agios Nikolaos.
- Check the hold luggage: two people travelling with a single checked suitcase can sometimes bring the total ticket price down noticeably.
Frequently asked questions
Including flights, allow about €1,600 on a shoestring, €2,500 to €2,600 for a comfortable trip in June or October, and €3,600 for the same trip in August. At the luxury end, with a 5-star hotel, the budget starts at around €6,500.
A small car costs about €20 to €35 a day in low season, €30 to €55 in May, June and October, and €55 to €90 in July and August. Add €8 to €15 a day for zero-excess insurance and expect a €300 to €800 deposit to be blocked on a credit card.
No, in 2026 there are no toll roads in Crete, including the main northern highway linking Chania to Agios Nikolaos. The future upgraded section between Chania and Heraklion will be run as a toll concession, but the works will take several more years.
The climate resilience tax is charged per room and per night. From April to October, it is €2 in a 1 or 2-star hotel, €5 in a 3-star, €10 in a 4-star, €15 in a 5-star and €8 for a short-term rental; from November to March, it drops to €0.50 to €4.
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, as all businesses have been required to offer card payment since 2024. Still, keep €50 to €100 in cash for small village tavernas, kiosks, some sunbeds and tips.
A pita gyros costs €3.50 to €6.50 depending on where you are, and a full taverna meal with house wine €15 to €22 per person. In the most touristy harbours, expect more like €30 to €45 per person.
In short: what budget should you allow for Crete?
For 7 days for two, flights included, remember three orders of magnitude: about €1,600 travelling simply, €2,500 to €2,600 for a comfortable trip outside August, €3,600 or more for the same trip in high summer, and from €6,500 for luxury. Your departure date remains the most powerful lever, ahead of your choice of hotel.
