How to get to Kissamos

By bus

Kissamos is connected by bus to the main towns of Crete, such as Chania (1-hour journey) and Rethymno (2 hours). Buses are affordable but not always frequent, so check the timetables in advance.

By car

Renting a car is the best option for discovering Kissamos and its surroundings at your own pace. From Chania airport, allow approximately a 1-hour drive. That way you can visit secluded beaches and remote villages as you please.

By boat ⛴

Several ferries link Piraeus (Athens) to the port of Kissamos, with a crossing of 10 to 11 hours (SeaJets, several sailings a week). It's a pleasant way to reach the island of Crete. The boat stops at Kythira and Antikythira (some sailings also call at Gythio in the Peloponnese).

Kissamos is undeniably a destination worth visiting during your stay in Crete. This charming coastal town offers a unique blend of natural beauty, fascinating history and authentic culinary traditions.

First of all, Kissamos is an ideal gateway to some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. The famous Balos Lagoon, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white-sand beaches, is easily reached from Kissamos. Falassarna beach, renowned for its pink sand and clear waters, is also nearby.

Next, history lovers will be delighted to explore the ruins of the ancient city of Polyrrhenia, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the Hellenistic era. The Archaeological Museum of Kissamos also houses impressive finds, notably exceptional Roman mosaics.

But Kissamos isn't just a destination for beaches and history. Nature lovers will be enchanted by the spectacular Topolia and Sirikari gorges, perfect for hiking and observing the local flora and fauna.

Is there too much tourism in Kissamos?

Although Kissamos is a popular tourist destination in Crete, it isn't yet overrun by excessive mass tourism. That said, it's true that the seafront and some coastal areas have seen significant tourist development in recent years.

If you're looking for a more authentic, less "touristy" experience, I recommend moving away from the seafront and staying in a more secluded hotel or holiday rental, inland or in the surrounding villages.

Indeed, the Kissamos hinterland has a unique charm, with its olive groves as far as the eye can see, its wild gorges and its small traditional villages. It's the best way to soak up the real Cretan atmosphere, far from the tourist crowds.

Still, Kissamos remains a must-stop on a trip to Crete, especially for its paradise beaches and exceptional historical sites. By moving slightly away from the most touristy areas, you can fully enjoy all the wonders this region has to offer while preserving its authenticity and tranquillity.
