The magnificent Falassarna beach is located on the west coast of Crete, approximately 1 hour by car west of Chania, in the village of Falassarna.
The village is quite small, with just a few small hotels and tavernas, but the beach itself stretches for almost 3 km with several different coves.
Here's a map showing the exact location of Falassarna in Crete:
Falassarna belongs to the municipality of Kissamos, in western Crete. The nearest village is Platanos, just 10 minutes away by car.

How to get to Falassarna beach

By car
The best way to get to Falassarna is to rent a car or a quad. From Chania, allow approximately a 1-hour drive via the national highway.
From Rethymno, allow approximately 1h40 on the road, and 2h45 from Heraklion.
Once in Kissamos, head towards Platanos on the national road, then follow the signs for Falassarna along the small winding road that leads to the village and the beach.
By bus
There is a KTEL bus service between Chania and Falassarna in the summer season (via Kissamos).
There are only a few departures a day depending on the period, and the journey takes about 1h30. Out of season, take the bus to Kissamos and then a taxi.
To check timetables and book your tickets, visit the KTEL website.
When to visit Falassarna

High season in Falassarna runs from June to September. This is when you'll find the most tourists.

Summer temperatures easily climb to 30-35°C. The sea is also warmer for swimming.
All beach facilities are open: sunloungers, parasols, restaurants, etc.
But…
I recommend visiting in May-June or September-October. There will be fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures around 25°C, and the sea will still be warm enough for swimming.
The best time? The month of June! Enjoy Falassarna's wild beauty before the crowds arrive.
Where to stay when visiting Falassarna
Falassarna is fairly small and doesn't have a wide choice of accommodation. But here are a few of my favourite picks!
NK Apartments: A modern escape steps from the beach
Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of the waves and the sea breeze caressing your face. NK Apartments embodies that dream. Set right on the edge of dazzling Falasarna beach, each apartment is a promise of comfort and elegance. It's the perfect combination of modern style and comfort, a welcoming cocoon after a sunny day by the sea.
Diamond Star: Unforgettable luxury with panoramic views
Diamond Star is more than a hotel, it's an experience. You step into a world of refined luxury where every detail is designed for your enjoyment. Picture yourself sipping a glass of wine on your private balcony, the sparkling sea before you. Here, every room is a window onto paradise, offering stunning views that invite daydreaming. Luxury and tranquillity reign supreme, for a timeless getaway.
Falasarna Villas: Your own private corner of paradise
At Falasarna Villas, you'll discover a haven of peace nestled in lush greenery. Each villa is an invitation to privacy and comfort, a place where time seems to stand still. The lush gardens, the breathtaking view of the sea and the Cretan landscape provide the perfect backdrop for unforgettable moments. It's the ideal place to recharge, far from the hustle and bustle, in a setting that is both luxurious and deeply serene.
The different beaches of Falassarna

Despite appearances, Falassarna isn't just one long beach but several coves and beaches stretching over 3 km.
Here are the main ones:
The Big Beach
The main beach is approximately 1 km long. With its pristine fine sand and turquoise waters, it's the perfect postcard!

It's also the busiest and best-organised beach. You'll find sunloungers and parasols to rent, snack bars, and a lifeguard station.
This is also where most of the village's hotels and restaurants are located.
Kalami beach
Just north of the Big Beach lies Kalami beach, my favourite little spot!
Reached by a path through the rocks, this small secluded cove is lined with cliffs. A real little paradise!
You can swim in clear water and enjoy the calm on this quiet beach, even in summer.
Karkatsouli beach
A little further north is another small sandy beach, Karkatsouli.
It can be reached from the Galasia Thea restaurant via a small path through the olive grove and the dunes.
Karkatsouli is usually very calm and quiet. You can feel like you're alone in the world on this beautiful beach! ⛱
Balos Lagoon: A natural gem nearby

About 45 minutes north of Falassarna, you'll discover another of Crete's treasures: the sublime Balos lagoon. This hidden paradise is famous for its turquoise waters and fine sand, offering scenery worthy of the finest postcards. What makes Balos so special is how easy it is to reach while keeping an almost untouched natural setting.
You can reach this enchanting spot in two ways: by ferry or by car.
- ⛴ The ferry ride is an experience in itself, giving you a breathtaking view of the coast and the lagoon from the sea. It's a relaxing, scenic option, ideal for those who want to savour the journey as much as the destination.
- Access by car is also possible. The last 8 km are on a rough dirt track (parking €3 plus a €1 per person access fee); it is an adventure in its own right, with spectacular views of the surroundings. Once parked, a 20-30 minute path leads down to the lagoon, making this an attractive option for those looking to combine comfort and discovery.
Things to do in Falassarna: Our favourite activities
Of course, swimming in clear water is one of the must-do activities in Falassarna! ♂
But there are so many other exciting things to do:
Hiking
Numerous trails criss-cross the hills around Falassarna, offering incredible viewpoints over the bay.
Water sports
In summer you can rent windsurfing or kayaking gear on the beach. And why not try snorkelling or scuba diving with the fish!

Sunsets
Falassarna faces due west, making it the perfect place to admire sublime sunsets.
Settle in comfortably at a restaurant or on the beach with a glass of local raki and enjoy the show!
Where to eat and drink during your stay

Most tavernas are along the main road running through the village of Falassarna.

Here are my favourite spots for traditional Cretan cuisine:
Taverna Spilios: My favourite taverna! Delicious homemade dishes made with ultra-fresh local produce. Try their Cretan salad and the grilled meats. With a jug of local wine, of course!
Orange Blue Bar: A trendy lounge bar just above the Big Beach. Cool decor, original cocktails and light bites. The ideal spot for watching the sunset!
Galasia Thea: A lovely family-run taverna nestled among the olive trees, overlooking the bay. Their speciality? Vegetable dishes from the garden and meat grilled over a wood fire.
Visit the ruins of the ancient city
Did you know that Falassarna is home to the remains of an ancient fortified seaport city?
Inhabited since Minoan times, the ancient city was an important commercial and naval centre between the 4th and 1st centuries BC.
Sadly, the city was taken by the Romans around 67 BC, who blocked its harbour; later, the earthquake of AD 365 lifted the coast by more than 6 metres, leaving the old harbour high and dry. Today, only foundations and sections of the ramparts remain.
The archaeological site is at the northern end of the beach, reachable on foot via a lovely path through the olive groves or by car via a small dirt road.
Allow 30 to 45 minutes to explore this fascinating historical site!
Access: the archaeological site is not organised and is freely accessible (any exceptional closure is posted on the Greek Ministry of Culture Odysseus website).
Walks around Falassarna

A great way to enjoy Falassarna is to head out on a walk to discover the magnificent surrounding landscapes.
Here are my favourite walks in the area:
Hike in the Topolia Gorge
Just 30 minutes' drive from Falassarna lies the spectacular Topolia Gorge. A real hidden treasure!
This easy 3 km return walk takes you into the heart of the gorge, below the Agia Sofia cave chapel.
The trail winds between tall ochre rock walls among plane trees, prickly pears and olive trees. A picture-postcard setting!
Walk in Sfinari
The sandy beach of Sfinari is just 10 minutes' drive from Falassarna.
From the small village, set off on a walk through olive groves and farm greenhouses. The 5 km loop also passes the delightful Byzantine chapel of Agios Mamas before returning to the long golden beach.
What to bring back from Falassarna?
Surely you'll want to take a little piece of Falassarna home with you?
Here are a few ideas for local souvenirs:
Cretan honey: the region produces excellent wildflower and thyme honeys to take home.
Sea salt: salt harvested by hand using traditional techniques makes an original culinary souvenir.
Olive oil: many olive groves produce a fruity, flavourful oil that you'll find at local producers.
Basketry: don't hesitate to bring back a basket hand-woven by a local craftsman.
Want to extend your stay?
